Re: Manifold gasket issues

I went back to the car the next day. I tightened a couple of the manifold nuts very slightly and although the throttle cable was still securely clamped I slackened it off very slightly. I wish I tried it again before touching anything as it was all fine - and I felt I changed things so little I wond...

Re: Manifold gasket issues

Thanks for ideas, I will check, but I'm pretty sure it's not the accelerator links. I only undid the part that holds the outer of the cable and spring is definitely back on, I did nearly forget that.

Manifold gasket issues

In order to try and cure issues of 'fumes' getting into the car I decided (right or wrong) to redo the exhaust to manifold joint and replace the manifold gasket. Spent some time doing this and trying to make sure all traces of old gasket were removed before fitting new one but after all that effort ...

Re: High Idle

Spent a few hours on the car yesterday and with the help of a good friend managed to get to the root cause of the issue. When I rebuilt the carb the New flap that I fitted didn't seat right and was letting in too much air. Long story short we refitted the old flap which (after years of wear) seated ...

I think I've checked this but I will go out and check it later when the heat has reduced - i've been out there for half an hour and I was melting!

High Idle

Hi Everyone. Well I seem to have got past the starting issue on the Moggie and even managed to start it on the handle when it had only sat a couple of days. I've got the points set to give 58Deg dwell angle. I've used a vacuum gauge on the inlet manifold and it's giving a respectable 20ish InsHg. Th...

Re: 1098cc Engine Compression

Quick update on this - Since the last post I've been trying to start the car every couple of days and I'm really pleased to say she started everytime without much effort.

Re: 1098cc Engine Compression

So, I finally got to work on the car again this weekend. I picked up a gallon of fresh fuel (sadly E10) and a new battery (075 from Halfords!). Tried to start - wouldn't start . I took all spark plugs out - rechecked the gaps and cleaned them - they seemed a little oily tbh. Turned engine over and i...

Re: 1098cc Engine Compression

Is the air intake and exhaust unrestricted ? Is the choke working? Have you tried a sniff of easy start or brake cleaner in the air intake Air intake clear - I've tried it with and without the air filter tbh (even though that's new). I believe the choke is working but will double check next time I'...

Re: 1098cc Engine Compression

As well as Phil's point, remove all plugs, one at a time, connect to their correct HT lead, wedge the plug to get a good earth, and crank the engine. Check that each plug does have a good spark. Separately, disconnect the fuel pipe from the top of the carb and place in a container suitable for petr...

Re: 1098cc Engine Compression

Weather has brightened up after a rainy morning here so went out and checked position of rotor arm when number 1 cylinder is on compression. I believe it is, here is my process. Take out No.1 spark plug. Hold thumb over hole whilst moving the engine with starting handle. Ensure that pressure is felt...

Re: 1098cc Engine Compression

Thanks everyone for your replies - sorry I've been slow to respond. So, it sounds like the compression isn't terrible then. So, I tried it a few days ago and eventually it started and ran for a while. But I've had no luck since. It's really not happy to fire up, occasional cough but just won't catch...

1098cc Engine Compression

Hi Everyone Sine my son bought his Moggie we have been recommissioning it to go back on the road. It's ended up in a state where it rally doesn't want to start. As far as I know Moggies are very easy to start, (?). I thought as a basic check I'd doa compression test - so admittedly its not with the ...

Re: Bleeding Brakes

So I remeasure the distances on the pedal travel. There is a generous half inch at the pedal of freeplay - I understand this as complete freeplay before the actuating rod touches the piston in the mc. There is then 2 & 1/8 Inch movement until pedal firm Firm pedal at 2 & 3/4 Inch from the fl...

Re: Bleeding Brakes

I wouldn't worry TOO much about the pedal travel at this stage. I've just read through this thread again and you mention having fitted new shoes front and back I think? That is something I try to avoid for exactly this reason because I have found that the brakes generally have poor feel and long tr...

Re: Bleeding Brakes

After the initial half inch free play there is still inch and half of travel before pedal is firm and that only an inch or so away from the floor. I tried it at low speed and brakes seemed poor, certainly not at road test quality yet. Have you tried pumping the brake pedal and if so, does the firmn...

Re: Bleeding Brakes

Yes classic cars are often aa can of worms. One job leads to another - especially if they have not been maintained to a high standard in the past. So with the servo taken out of the equation and pipes reconnected accordingly I re-bled the entire system. There seemed to be an improvement but I believ...

Re: Bleeding Brakes

Since the last post I have taken the servo out of the loop and replumbed the system to work without. When I took apart the servo there was a litre of brake fluid inside oin the air side. Managed to get a really neat video of it all pouring out and me panicking. Rebled the system and it seemed a litt...

So what happened in the last four years. Was it removed ? Was it replaced. Was it left in and is perfectly ok? Be interesting to know.
