Re: Noise from the rear end!!
I had a similar knocking/banging noise when I went over sleeping policemen, bumps etc, and in the end it was the rear axle hitting the exhaust pipe. When stationary, there was a gap between the axle and the exhaust pipe, but as the springs compress over a bump, the axle moves up, and that was causin...

Re: Diff Oil Amount.
When I change my diff oil, I jack the rear of the car up to get better access - thus the filler plug will be angled a bit higher than if the car was level - perhaps this explains why a bit more oil can be added before it weeps out of the filler plug!

2023 Classic Car Show, NEC - where did the cars go?
Hi all, Did many on this forum visit this year's Classic Car Show in Birmingham this weekend? It was great to see the MMOC stand, and the Young Members stand (both with a good selection of the greatest cars ever made!) but what surprised me was the lack of cars from other makes - where were the Fren...

Valve Clearance on a modified engine
Hello everyone, I am going to check/adjust the valve clearances, but as my engine has been modified, I am uncertain as to the best settings to use. My engine is a 1098, with a 12G202 head (picture below). I have a Kent fast road cam fitted, polished ports, LCB exhaust and an HIF44 carb with a K&...

Re: Cruising Speeds 1098cc Motorways etc
I fitted a 3.7 diff to my warmed up 1098 Moggy (on a rolling road, 54hp at the wheels!) and it does make for more relaxed cruising. Pulling away at junctions etc is not a problem, but where I could often easily pull away in 2nd gear when I had the 4.22 diff, 1st gear is now needed more. I used this ...

Re: Old English White RAL Colour Code??
When I wanted to colour match something to a RAL colour, I bought a sample tin - much easier and more accurate than trying to match computer screen colours or tiny colour cards in a shop! Try these guys - they do the 1013 Oyster Paint as a RAL tester: https://onestopaerosols.co.uk/ral-classic-paint/

Re: Who owns Quicksilver (YSY 946)
A slight thread drift - I was talking to a track marshal about our Morris Minors at Goodwood recently, and many years ago he put his spare wheel under the bonnet - he removed the existing bonnet strut and made a new one to hold the wheel. He did this to make room in the boot for his camping gear. I ...

Re: Replacing the manifold gasket
Thanks Phil! Today I removed the manifold nuts (they came off very easily) and removal of the old gasket proved to be trouble free. It's always nice when the issue is evident to see - the gasket had thinned out so the exhaust gas (and tell tale soot!) was easily visible. Next job is to clean both al...

Re: Replacing the manifold gasket
New gasket as been ordered!
Just in case I use the wrong grease on the gasket, which grease can I use? I use MolyGrease general purpose lithium based for trunnions, UJ's etc, but is that suitable for the high temps on a manifold gasket?
Many thanks!

Replacing the manifold gasket
Hello, I think I have a small leak in my manifold gasket - at one of the exhaust ports. I am getting a 'ticking/clicking' noise when driving, no reduction in power, no increase in temperatures, and no 'mayonnaise' or signs of oil in the coolant. I noticed a tiny amount of soot residue on the manifol...

Re: Starting Handle Points vs Electronic Ignition
I have electronic ignition and have used the handle to start the car (always as a party piece as well!) and have never had a problem! I don't know which type of electronic ignition is fitted - perhaps different types can affect the handle starting process?

Many thanks for that! I've just been in told by Smiths instruments that their dual water temp/oil pressure gauge in electronic format will be launched this autumn, but I can wait!

Re: Fitting Oil Gauge
I know most oil pressure gauges are 'mechanical', but are there any downsides to fitting an electronic version? I have an Smiths electric water temp gauge which works perfectly well, and I'd like to fit a Smiths oil pressure gauge (or a dual water temp/oil pressure electronic one if Smiths do one) a...

A guide to waxoyling a Moggy?
I have searched on-line, but I just cannot find a good and clear guide on how to waxoyl (or other similar products) a Minor. I don't know if or when the hidden internals of my car might have been protected in the past, but I would like to bring the protection up to date. I would like to protect the ...

Re: Which air filter for HIF38 carb?
I've just won an ebay bid for the Mini air box, complete with 90 degree elbow - looking forward to them arriving! @ Panky - I'll need to buy the filter element to go in, and see you have fitted a K&N element. Out of curiosity, what was the reason for fitting the K&N rather than the 'standard...

Re: Which air filter for HIF38 carb?
Thanks both for your suggestions! Panky, am I right in thinking you fitted the Mini air box as below, and cut off the inlet shown by the pink arrow? Did you blank this hole off, or keep the hole and added the extra two holes as in your photo? This air box also has a spigot (yellow arrow) and I am gu...
