Rear telescopic shock absorbers
My 1958 Minor had, at some point been modified with anti-tramp bars welded to the axle and telescopic shock absorbers vertically installed in the wheel arches. While rebuilding the car, I needed to replace these and found that ones now generally available are for inboard kits (thus avoiding any need...

Re: fume vent dumping oil
I'd always thought the fumes were sucked into the air filter (or via the vent tube in the side of some carbs), too. Very helpful info Gents. Back in the 1970s, my 1275 Midget at the time had the PCV fitment and after a complete engine rebuild, the car routinely blew a quick puff of oil smoke from th...

Re: questions for upgrades in 1275cc Minor
Absolutely. UK Authorities in some Police areas are apparently no longer giving drivers a 10% tolerance so apart from needing a speedometer that is at least over-reading, drivers need to know by how much. The average speed camera zones are also critical. I use a Sat-nav as a back-up/safeguard and at...

Re: questions for upgrades in 1275cc Minor
With reference to the under-reading speedo, I took the easy way out. I've replaced the 80mph face with one from a spare 90mph speedo head. I tested it with GPS this morning and the result is a satifactory fix. Instead of the original 10% under-reading because of my higher ratio diff, the speedo now ...

Re: questions for upgrades in 1275cc Minor
I've nearly finished installing a 90mph (black) face to replace the original silver 80mph face. The resulting speedo looks a bit odd with silver centre and fuel gauge but it's worth a punt to see if it reads anywhere near accuracy! At a glance the reading should certainly be better than 10% under. I...

Re: questions for upgrades in 1275cc Minor
Just thought.... Perhaps I can use a 90mph face only, to replace my 80mph one. The speeds' positions look as if they'll address the original's under-reading (pity it'll then be a mix of black and silver colours, but easy to do!?).

Re: questions for upgrades in 1275cc Minor
Thanks Declan. I've various speedos in my workshop with assorted codes (albeit mainly classic minis) so will first experiment to see whether any of those are closer.

Re: questions for upgrades in 1275cc Minor
Thanks John.
Yes, Monty, I ran out of stud length with a mix of spacers (alloy and/or bakolite plastic) but I'll look at longer studs. I'm glad it's not just me, but a friend tells me this isn't an isolated problem, although Phil was able to avoid it....

Re: questions for upgrades in 1275cc Minor
Thanks for replies: John: Speedo S/N is 4406/00 1625 Phil: The underside of the carbs themselves (float chambers on HS2s catch, and between float chambers and jet housings do on HS4s). I think my Dellorto would pair to that inlet manifold but I'd like to use SUs if I can overcome the issue. I'm more...

Re: questions for upgrades in 1275cc Minor
Yep. It'll come to me eventually I guess. By the way, the dent you see in my exhaust manifold is where I clouted it in exasperation when I couldn't clear it (so that shows the location of the problem)! Cheers

Re: questions for upgrades in 1275cc Minor
Thanks for your patience, Phil. The inlet manifold was "as original" and had the same angles as the Cooper HS2 manifold I'd tried. I've since given the Oselli one to a friend after fitting the single water heated HS4 option to the Moggy.

Re: questions for upgrades in 1275cc Minor
Thanks for your reply (yes you can see the "maniflow" tag on the front pipe)....but sadly, as I said, I've tried and the bottoms of the HS4s foul this exhaust (A manifold with HS2s also did before I put them on my Riley Elf instead). I tried pairing up thick spacers with gaskets between al...

Re: questions for upgrades in 1275cc Minor
I tried various spacers between the carbs and the (Oselli type) inlet manifold, but the bottom of SUs couldn't clear the exhaust.

Re: questions for upgrades in 1275cc Minor
My maniflow LCB branches come out almost horizontally for the first 9 inches or so, so I can't use it with normal twin inlets.

Re: questions for upgrades in 1275cc Minor
Sorry, I should clarify, I have the inlet manifold for twin SUs, it's a suitable exhaust manifold to clear the bottom of the carbs (the Maniflow LCB would go right through the position of the twin carbs). "yes" I have a 731 profile cam in situ and matched electronic distributor to work wit...

questions for upgrades in 1275cc Minor
Hello, I have rebuilt my '58 Minor with a reconditioned 1275cc (now 1298) engine, servo assisted Marina disc brakes, anti-tramp bars, telescopics all round, baulk ring synch g/box, and recon high ratio diff (plus a lot more). I have 3 resulting issues and seek advice: 1. Is there an exhaust manifold...
