Re: Driver behaviour
One sad statistic that I read is that there are approximately 1,700 traffic related deaths in the UK each year....and if bends in roads are straightened out, and hidden dips filled in and roads improved, there would still be approximately 1,700 deaths because bad driver behaviour is the main cause.

Re: Driver behaviour
Two incidents come to mind that still puzzle me.... In the first I was driving my minor saloon at 50mph on a 60mph road. There was little traffic about, but a transit van with 2 men in the front came up fast behind me and sat on my tail. I could not go much faster, so when a layby came up on my left...

Re: Electrical help
There are some good solar powered pond accessories available now. I have got a little fountain in my small pond that throws water up about 18" on a sunny day. The solar panel is about 6" square, and the whole thing cost about £14 delivered. It has lasted 3 years so far ,and is still going ...

Re: smart to get one?
I like Octopus Chipper, in spite of all the smart meter hassle The latest communication I have had was Octopus telling me that they have arranged for an engineer to call to take away my RTS meter (which I do not have). I have told them that I will only get a smart meter if it becomes a legal ...

Re: smart to get one?
I read somewhere that if a meter is working properly, you cannot be forced to change it. Octopus have not told me yet that my meter is faulty.... however, that might be the theme of the next phone call. My meter is at least 25 years old. I don't suppose you've got a RTS Dual Rate meter? Where you h...

Re: smart to get one?
Not sure if it is true, but I heard that manufacturers are putting chips in appliances that mean that the appliance can be controlled from the suppliers end. You might want to do your laundry on a Monday morning, but if there is too much demand for electricity, the supplier will disable your washing...

Re: smart to get one?
I've been with Octopus for about 4-5 years. I've stuck with them not just because they offer reasonable rates but also because of issues I've had with other companies. My house had a Day/Night Meter fitted originally but around 15 years ago I managed, with whomever I was with at the time, to get my...

smart to get one?
Definitely 'off topic' this one. Octopus want me to get a smart meter, but I don't want one. A recent tele programme about them stated that they are 100% for the provider, not the customer. The provider gets paid for each smart meter it installs. I have even heard the suggestion that, because of fut...

Re: Drive it day
I drove around in my Minor for an hour or so yesterday and only saw a man on a scooter and my neighbour in his mk1 Granada.
I was not organised enough to do it for the charity, but I don't think the Drive It Day message is getting through.

Does knowing how a car works make the driver more cautious, or more confident?

Re: True Speed
I have sometimes wondered if a more hotrod trimmed Minor would feel more grounded and less floaty.
Either a spline lower on the torsion bars, or a longer rear spring shackle to lower the front end to give a ground effect ( like 'gentlemen lift your skirts' ).

Re: True Speed
What do you mean by floaty? I mean the sensation at increasing speed that the steering gets lighter and lighter and the car feels tiny, vulnerable and easily buffeted by lorries etc like it is floating on air. I think that whereas a modern car is designed with spoilers etc to maintain down force th...

Re: True Speed
Maybe this post was a bad idea. Maybe I am just jealous of those with Minors that can cruise at 65mph. My first Minor in 1982 was a 1967 pickup. I knew little about engines then, and was probably quite ignorant of the dangers of going fast in a car that had been basically designed in the 1940s. I di...

Thread size
Does anyone know the thread size for the studs that attach the central trim to the front panel please. I mean the exterior trim, not the front grill. I think the nuts are nylon on newer cars, and ESM supply a kit where the studs and nuts are both nylon. My studs are metal, and the nylon nuts are spl...

Re: True Speed
I wish I had investigated the D reg more before I sold it.
I have never seen a carb with a pipe from the rocker cover going to it since...maybe from a mini?
It certainly looked like a 1" 1/4" SU with a Minor air filter housing.
