Re: Electronic ignition
Apart from the fact that heel wear on the contact points will alter the timing over time, they also try to bull readers into thinking the points open further as the heel wears - patently not true! That, or whoever wrote the splurge, is an idiot! As an electronic alternative to the Kettering system,...

Total brake failure.
My brakes had started to go a bit soft so I thought I would order all new brake cylinders and a master cylinder and do a full refurbish. Ordered them all, when they arrived I thought I will change them tomorrow. I popped out the day I was going to fit them, I was on the A38 and just coming off the s...

Electronic ignition
Just fitted the Sparkrite SX4000 Electronic Ignition conversion kit for Classic Cars £30 and it took me 20 minutes. The car seems to be running much more smoother. I like the idea of being able to switch back to points if something goes wrong.

Re: gear changing
Richard is right. Those that have driven three speeders, 4 speed crash boxes - and only then had the luxury of synchromesh and 5/6 speed gearboxes - they present no great problem. It is only those that have no experience who seem to find difficulty with these very basic gear shifters. Several of my...

Re: gear changing
4-speed gearboxes generally did not have a bias spring that takes the gear lever into the 3rd/4th plane, so they need a positive movement from 2nd ACROSS and up into 3rd. The bias spring became the norm with 5-speed, and 6-speed manual gearboxes, and that is what we have become accustomed to, with ...

Re: Indicators
Glad you got it sorted and that you are back on the road. I hope the 'canister' type one you now have lasts longer than the others. Its a pretty poor show that two of the new-fangled units you bought were useless. I would definately be keeping an eye open for a good NOS one for my box of spares if ...

Re: Indicators
If you're not worried about "correct" units then have a look at Vehicle Wiring Products website. They have a range of electronic flasher units that I have used for years without problems. Just pick the right unit and it's a straight swap. Later on I'll see if I can find the part number an...

Re: Indicators
As identified by 'propshaft' earlier today, the quality of replacement flasher units is not that of the originals. I found a mint nos one at an autojumble and suggest you look out for a good, original one too. Maybe club spares have one? In terms of testing, if you are now truly getting 'nothing' t...

Re: Wiring for ammeter
The voltmeter is very simple, just connect it between the fuse connected to the ignition switched circuit, and a good earth. It is effectively telling you the voltage straight across the battery, but needs to be via the ignition switch so it is not permanently connected. I fitted a new dash panel i...

Indicators
When I first got my morris minor the indicators stopped working but the flasher on the arm still flashed resulting in getting a horn sounded at me. I went on ebay and got a flasher unit, one that said for classic cars, fitted it and all was well. They stopped working last week after 10 months so I r...

Re: Fitting an Alternator Video
I have fitted an alternator and just followed the drawing given. I am a bit surprised that when I turn the lights on whilst the engine is running the ammeter goes well into the -? I put my volt meter on the battery and it is 14.5v no lights on and 13v with lights on so it seems the alternator is wor...

Re: Alternator better???
I think you've perhaps got a mix up with the D wire(s). There's previously 2 wires going to D, as per this post: https://www.mmoc.org.uk/Messageboard/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=39514 it's almost certainly not connected up correctly; but I'm happy on a Generator, so not sometime I've 1st hand experien...

Alternator better???
Hi, I purchased a new alternator and fitted it after some wiring problems. The instructions did not say join the two wires together from the F & D and the drawing was not clear also. I searched this forum and found someone who at the end of his remarks said "don't forget to join the wires t...

Re: gear changing
The Minor as with most classic cars does have a long throw on the gear lever, and there is no biasing towards any position. Gear changing has to be a slower and more definite action, with a decisive move to the right going from 2nd to 3rd, I used to catch 1st when I 1st took up Minor driving. No ra...
