Re: EV story

Thinking about it afterwards; he was either driving slowly and not indicating because his battery was about to die....or he just did not want to indicate for a scruffy old car. What would be your guess? Maybe he was actually trying to save a few microamps? I've noticed quite a lot of EV's have comb...

Re: Rear hub lip seal

Yes, I didn't realise how thin that waisted section at the rear of the hub was. However....I tried on a spare hub that probably won't get re-used anyway. The small groove or nick is in the thicker part of the hub and should be clear of the thinner section. IMG_20230917_111244554_MFNR~2.jpg I put an ...

Rear hub lip seal

I'm having the usual trouble with removing an old and decomposing lip seal and wondering about a small modification to the hub, to make future removals easier. I seem to remember on the front(Marina disc converted) hubs that there is a small angled groove in the hub, to enable removal of the bearing...

That is very sad to hear. He must have freely given many hours of his time on just this forum alone to help others out. He will be missed.

Re: Fitting metalastic eyebolt bushes

I've only found one type/grade of metalastic bush and it has lasted many years. There seems to be a few varieties of poly bushes. Some I have used have lasted very well (superflex?), others have been poor.

Re: Modern vehicle cam belts...

Credit to you, that's not a job I would be brave enough to attempt. :(
I did notice on a 55 plate Polo service record that a cam belt change had never been done. When queried was told it had a chain not a belt. Wonder if chains are coming back?

Re: Poor quality brake shoes?

Another problem with the bonded shoes I've had is they have a very uneven surface with high and low areas. This must affect the brake performance as I've never managed to get them fully bedded in with an even flat surface. If I hadn't found some NOS riveted ones I would have had some re-lined and ri...

Re: Insurance for a Modern. NCB question.

That arrangement served well but the relative is giving up driving and garaging for the car. It was only used to transport them to me and back with me as the driver. It will come to live with me as I have now found out that the insurance will be much cheaper as well.

Re: Insurance for a Modern. NCB question.

Shop around and I am sure you will find an answer - have you tried the relative's insurer? Yes and no joy there. I found a quote in the end on confused.com that was much cheaper than I feared (not having a NCB). My lack of claims seemed to be taken into account which must have offset my lack of no ...

Re: Insurance for a Modern. NCB question.

Thanks for the help and suggestions guys. I just spoke to FJ and apparently I don't have any NCB, despite being claim free with them (and AON etc.) for many many years. Even if I insure the modern through them I will have to start from scratch. So that's a BIG thumbs down for FJ. :( I don't understa...

Re: Insurance for a Modern. NCB question.

Our broker warned us of this years ago when I started driving classics as 'main ' transport. We put me as named driver on my wife's modern policy and preserved my max no claims. If needs must I could go back to a modern without penalty. That's handy to know. I have been a named driver for many year...

Re: Insurance for a Modern. NCB question.

Thanks Panky. I am already on their policy as the main driver. Maybe this would have counted towards some NCB?

Insurance for a Modern. NCB question.

I may need to insure a relatives car with me as the main driver so that I can drive them around. I only have my Minor insured at the moment, this has been so for many years. I seem to remember when I asked my insurer (FJ) before about this that I was told I would have to build up a NCB bonus from sc...

Re: Poylbush hardnesses

Don, Although they don't look professional, I'm quite happy with them and they seat quite well. I have ordered some polyurethane and will mould a few test pieces when it arrives. I will post pics of the results. Regards Declan They look pretty good to me Declan, just not as shiny as the Superflex o...

Re: Poylbush hardnesses

How well do you find that the bushes seat Declan? Unlike yours, I have noticed that some tie rod bushes don't have any raised area to fit in the hole of the front mounting and rely on just sitting in the cupped washers. I had a tie bar wear quite a lot because this type of bush without the shoulder ...

Re: F1, not long now......

Yeah, MotoGP certainly is exciting. Don't worry Mr BMC, I think the Guy Martin programme is part of his Speed series and not the general F1 coverage. Anyway, it could have been worse. He could have been racing against Sebastien Vettel instead of DC. :o

Re: Garage power cable

Don't give up Les, wait to see what the electrician says. I don't see anything difficult in asking what cable to put in and if they will supply it, although they may want to see the cable in the trench to check it is deep enough etc before it is covered in. Get a few quotes as I found each electrici...
