I'm on the look out for a (not too dear....) 948 crank and a set of 998 flat top A+ pistons & Rods, if anyone has any spare?
I have a crank, but it's in the engine I've been using as a set up unit, and it's rather imprisoned by the body buck for the forseeable future........

it's better than knocking lumps out of it with the valves!
but I agree, I'd like to avoid it if I can

Re: Fast road / race 1098 - your thoughts please.
I just took delivery of a 1098 engine I bought off Evilbay, which very helpfully came with a spare head, shown in the photos, but not described. So, I now have 2 295 heads! :-) But, one has obviously been skimmed (about 1.5mm), so now I need to work out which to keep.... I have been planning to use ...

Re: Fast road / race 1098 - your thoughts please.
Hi Folks, been making some progress on the car, but not on the engine. I have a slave engine in the chassis to help with the bodywork design, but am still on the lookout for a donor 1098 block if anyone has one within reasonable traveling distance of Fife? If anyone is interested, here's what the ca...

Re: Fast road / race 1098 - your thoughts please.
Am I right in thinking that apart from the oil pump drive, camshafts are interchangable between all A series engines - i.e a 286 will fit equally well in a small or large bore block, and there are not 'small bore' and 'large bore' versions of the same profiles? Been a while since I bought a Cam! Che...

Re: Fast road / race 1098 - your thoughts please.
Does the 1098 block need decked to take Mini Pistons/ rods?
I take it the 1098 to use is the ore common small Journal Crank rather than the 2"?
Don't supose anyone near Edinburgh has a decent 1098 block going spare? or a set of Metro 998 rods and Pistons?

Re: Fast road / race 1098 - your thoughts please.
Guess what.... several years down the line, 2 A-series engined racing car projects,2nd child, and a house move later and I was searching for info whilst musing over engine thoughts for my current project, and I stumbled over this thread. Took me a few minutes to realise I started it!!!! Curren...

No, it's a 948 which has already been taken out to 998.bmcecosse wrote:A 998 block - from a Mini?? No use as an inline engine I'm afraid - but will donate pistons and rods..........

Re: reducing sump depth
mocked it up in the chassis, and I think I'll live with the standard sump depth as lowering it too much creates other issues elsewhere, so it will need a (not too large) bulge in the bonnet to clear it, no great problems though as I have complete freedom in that area. Body sides will be flat alloy, ...

Re: reducing sump depth
reasonable points. but, I have a 295 head on the shelf! I think I also have a 240, but that would mean pocketing the block, especially given the cam. getting the CR right might be tricky with a 940 on a 998? a '45 on a 998 might also be horrid to drive - no bottom end? a '40 should be OK I think as ...

Re: reducing sump depth
Excellent. It would also no doubt mean taking a chunk off the bottom of the bell housing and the mating plate, so I will look into it. Here's a really bad photo of it crammed in the garage: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7177/6928597684_e0a77ca5ce_c.jpg Chassis and engine and a slightly better one of...

reducing sump depth
Hi Folks, I have a 60s clubmans car (like a lotus seven) and I'm refitting it with a 948cc engine as it was originally built. Setting the engine in the frame I need to keep the sump level with the base of the chassis as it has little enough ground clearance as it isI would however like to keep the w...

engine drawing needed
Hi, I'm trying to get hold of a set of (General assembly) engineering drawings for the in-line A series engine. 948,1098 or 1275cc ideally they'd be plan, side and end elevations. don't need more than basic dimensions on them to scale them up. also, don't need gearbox sizes either. does anyone have ...

There seem to be various threads indeed! and this has led to a wee bit of confusion on my part I'm afraid (almost as much as getting the forum search to work  ) To sumarise the other threads, am I correct in thinking that the 803 tailshaft and change assembly can be mounted on the ribbed box, ...

803 gear lever position on later box
I have a 1098 engine on a 'ribbed' box in my 60's clubmans race car. The gear lever is far too far back in the cockpit. So, my question is - can I fit an earlier A30 / minor 'magic wand' lever and associated casing to the rear of my box as this would move it to the right position? If so, does anyone...

Hi all, Just had a thought...... I have recently found a set of original 998 D crown Cooper pistons and a set of Mini Miglia Slipper pistons (Which themselves are quite rare). As the compression height on both of these is too high for 1098, can i get away with machining down the crown? (approx 3mm t...

Many thanks to ray of Lymington, But I'm afraid I'm not down south much, so will have to keep an eye out for a crank which can be posted rather than a full engine. Spoken with JP Pistons in Australia - recon that's the way I'll go for now, with the option to rebuild in future with a 948 crank and Mi...

yes, I think ther'd be little point in paying the extra for a good engine only to strip it out. So I supose, all I really need is just Crank and Block from 948, I'll use 998 A+ rods as well as pistons. Pretty much everything else will be replaced or carried over from 1098 stuff I have. Are Clutch / ...

Just sat down with Vizard and a calculator....... Basically, as the stroke is the same, overboring a 948 to take 998 pistons will give me 998cc - the same as the original spec for the car, so that'll be easiest solution, rather than having to deck so much off the 1098 block and still have to find a ...
