Who cares what size it is? The easiest way to get it out is by driving it round with a centre punch. That way you don't have to disconnect the horn to prevent it going off either.

I reckon a washer 1/8" thick under the eye bolt is worth about a degree. The positioning of the eye bolt can move if the chassis leg is replaced. Also they will bend - mine moved about a 3/16 in a severe sideways incident I had a few weeks ago. Needed a new wheel too.

The flared exhaust joint can be a real sod to get to stay sealed for more than a few weeks at a time. Try and get one of the cast clamps not the weaker pressed tin ones. Make sure the pipe is approaching the manifold at the right angle - if necessary clamp the pipe lightly to the manifold in the dea...

Gasket sealant doesn't always seem to do the job in which case a tip I heard of a while ago is to bond the gaskets in place with epoxy adhesive! The logic being that the tappet covers are a bit ornamental anyway, most other OHV engines did without them. If you do ever have to get in there anyway the...

Yes the 1500 Triumph engine is pretty weak. On which note, a mate of mine has one in a Spitfire and he is struggling with setting up the twin Waxstat SUs (yes I know this is a Morris Minor website but forgive me, there are a lot of knowledgeable folk out there in minorland). The waxstats seem to ope...

When you say coil polarity is important, does that mean simply that it is important not to muddle it up like I did so that you are driving the HT through the primary as well as the secondary, which is a stupid thing to do, or is actually important which is the anode and cathode on the plug, which wo...

Coil Failures

Thanks for the advice Cam re back to front connection of the coil. The picture got me thinking and I found one of my failed coils which I hadn't got round to binning. I hacksawed round the case to open it up and lo! there were the two wires to the + terminal and one to the - terminal. So + and - are...

Coil Polarity

The picture of the innards of the coil helps explain things thanks - get it wrong and you are putting the HT through the primary as well as through the secondary. No wonder the insulation breaks down, though there won't bw much potential difference between earth and the far side of a few ohms of pri...

Coil failures

These problems sound very familiar to me. My 1098 pickup has been eating coils. I've fitted about 5 over 3 years/30 000 miles and I'm getting fed up with it. And likewise I found that the only time I had to call the RAC was when I trusted a brand new Lucas DLB101 and it failed after 3 weeks leaving ...

Dynamo rear bearing

If you do fit a new dynamo don't forget to oil the rear bearing before you fit the dyanamo otherwise it will wear out in a couple of thousand miles. Trickle oil into the hole marked 'oil' until the felt pad is saturated. It's best to do this when the dyanamo is off the car so you can stand it on end...
