Re: Insurance - Are there any really specialist brokers?

Finally got a solution to the problem: Adrian Flux. They do seem to act like a proper broker as they said they searched 50-60 companies when they gave me a quote. The person who I spoke to on the phone also seemed totally clued up, not someone who just robotically goes through the standard questions...

Re: Insurance - Are there any really specialist brokers?

To answer Les, renewing our main modern car insurance was not a problem. However, I have just had to pay a high premium for my 2003 Jag S type.

I will give ERS a try.

Insurance - Are there any really specialist brokers?

Footman James are refusing to renew the insurance on our Minor (despite being insured with them for about 20 years) after we have had two own fault claims on our modern car in the last year and one non-fault claim on the Minor the year before. I have tried various of the well known classic car insur...

Re: Plus Gas vs WD40 Specialist Penetrant Spray

The Screwfix penetrant spray worked fine. The biggest problem with the shock absorbers was splitting the taper joints. Had to give up on one side and purchase a new link arm.

Re: Plus Gas vs WD40 Specialist Penetrant Spray

Thanks for all the advice. I have bought some of the Screwfix No nonsense penetrating oil so I will give that a go.

I have noticed in the last few days how WD40 is the main range stocked by lots of retailers which means that products like Plus Gas is quite hard to get hold of.

Plus Gas vs WD40 Specialist Penetrant Spray

I am intending to change my rear shock absorbers so I want to buy some penetrating oil. Plus Gas gets a lot of mentions on the message board. Does anyone know if the new WD40 Specialist Penetrant Spray is as good? It is easier to get hold of.

Re: Steering wheel

If you have not already got the large type centre boss and horn push that go with the metal spoked wheel be prepared to pay quite a bit for one as decent units are quite rare.

Froth in gearbox oil

I have just checked my gearbox oil and there is some froth on the top. It is not like mayonaise, more like a bubbly froth.

Should I change the oil?

Re: 2013 national Saturday :((((

I would like to congratulate the organisers for this years National. The events in the arena including the various non-Minor cars made it much more entertaining than previous years. Also from other years, we have learned not to rely on the few catering facilities that tend to be there. We normally b...

Re: Serious Oil Leak And Noisy Gearbox... Normal?

Noisy (ie whining) first gear is pretty standard. In any case you can start off in second most of the time in 948cc car as 1st is so low. Other clunks when driving or noise when idling would indicate something is wrong. Are you sure your clutch is adjusted correctly? Note clutch pedal free travel is...

Clutch Broken Anti-Rattle Spring

This is a variation of a post I have put on the Wanted section as this has not had much response. One of these springs has broken on my 948cc car's clutch while taking out a duff gearbox. I gather the same clutch is fitted to 803cc Series II cars as well. Does anyone have an old clutch sitting aroun...

Re: Speedo reading half the correct speed

Looks like my best bet might be to get my original speedo recalibrated by a specialist firm.

Thanks for all the advice.

Re: Speedo reading half the correct speed

Thanks very much for the advice so far.

So it seems that my 948 box somehow has a speedometer drive from a Series 2 (803 cc) box. Is this possible?

If so, presumably I can fit a speedometer from a late Series 2 if these are baically the same gold face speedos as fitted to 948 Minors.

Cheers,
Steve

Speedo reading half the correct speed

I have just changed the gearbox on my 948 cc Minor. The speedo now reads approximately half the correct value. It worked fine with the old box.

Any thoughts?

I have read something in the workshop manual about the speedo drive changing after a certain date. Could this be anything to do with it?

It should go up. This also helps stuff from falling off the shelf if any of your screws drop out.

Gearbox Crossmember Bolts

Does anyone know what the correct size is for the bolts and captive nuts that fix the gearbox cross member to the chassis rail? The reason I need to know is that on taking out my gearbox, on one side two bolts head been cut off and replaced with welds. One nut remained on the other side but I had to...

Re: Fitting Seat Belts

Our 1960 Convertible had no seat belts when I bought it, and incidentally also only had trafficators that weren't working. It felt odd driving without seatbelts! I fitted rear seatbelts first to protect the kids. I followed this with front ones shortly after. I agree that safety should be the no. 1 ...

Re: Door Mirrors

I have tried more than one type of mirror that fits to the quarterlight and found them useless because they are too far back. I suspect that mirrors mounted on the doors may have similar problems unless specifically designed for the Minor or a car with similar dimensions. So you are probably better ...

Re: Boot Rack

I had a similar problem when fitting a boot rack to our 1960 convertible. I actually had to file down the metal clamps and had to use the rack without the plastic protectors. I remember now I also had to adjust the boot lock! As using the rack was essential for an MOT trip to France, I had to persev...
