Spare engine queries
I bought the engine below a few years ago with the intention of stripping and rebuilding as a spare. It turns easily and having taken the head off it appears there is very little wear - no discernible lip on the bores, standard bore dimensions, valve seats ok (photo isn't great), and little wear on ...

Re: Vanessa '68 2dr saloon
More progress. Both inner wings replaced, final panels to be replaced are the rear boot floor and the lower boot surround, Both of which have numerous patch repairs. Cut the boot floor out today but left the boot surround in place as a reference. 20260305_204241.jpg 20260305_204250.jpg 20260305_2115...

Re: Vanessa '68 2dr saloon
Good run today- tacked in the right rear wing flange and welded in the repair flange. 20251214_152258.jpg Lots of clamping to keep it tight. Wing bolted on to ensure flange location is correct. 20251214_154221.jpg repair flange tacked in place. 20251214_155426.jpg flange welding completed. 20251214_...

I fitted a Mini one to my Midget, has been fine for about 5 years. I find A series common parts from Mini Spares to be better quality and more reliable. https://www.minispares.com/adu9102ms-he ... inal-shape

Re: Vanessa '68 2dr saloon
I'm starting to work less so will have time to make more progress so expect more regular updates. Today prepared and welded the lower repair panel in the o/s rear wing. Surprised no one has mentioned Halfords blue silicate antifreeze which I've always used and assumed is OK for our cars?

Re: Rear jacking point reinforcing plates
OK, so the jacking reinforcing goes on the outside, so what's the offset on the chassis leg for? I've checked again and there has never been anything welded to the offset. Possibly for something to slot into?

Rear jacking point reinforcing plates
I'm assuming the step in the rear rear chassis leg that I've circled is to accommodate the jacking plate 39 in the factory manual extract below? No sign of it that I recall when I cut out the old rear spring mountings. iMarkup_20250202_143940.jpg 20250202_131813.jpg As I've no intention of jacking o...

Re: Vanessa '68 2dr saloon
Good session today drilling out the spot welds, removing the inner wing and cleaning up the flanges. Upper rear chassis leg is sound, lower section which houses the rear spring hanger is heavily corroded and is a mass of patches.

Re: Vanessa '68 2dr saloon
More progress being made now that I'm back working on Vanessa having put other projects aside. Nearside completed and a start made on the offside. The inner wing needed a lot of work to get it to fit. I spent a lot of time fitting the wing to get the front edge aligned and the new flange and wing fi...

Re: LED stop / tail bulbs and indicator bulbs
Not directly on topic, but I've recently fitted LED side lights on my older car (78 MG BGT), I've fitted higher intensity (200 lumen) side lights from classic car LEDs and wired them as daytime running lights- come on alone with ignition and stay on with the lights in sidelight and headlight . Dayti...

Re: Vanessa '68 2dr saloon
Making good progress, replacement flange welded to the wheel arch and primed. 20241124_171636.jpg While attaching the flange I discovered that the boot surround panel is made of two panels with the join lead loaded- which doesn't weld! 20241124_171644.jpg A tool I've made is an attachment which I've...

Re: More woke nonsense
In my working life I prepared a specification for a building management system (BMS) for a university project in which we referred to " master and slave" controls. The University asked us to change the wording as the use of the word 'slave' in documentation on campus could offend some peop...

Back in the saddle with Vanessa. Made a couple of bump stop pads to be fitted in due course. 20241117_135630.jpg The rear wheel arch repair has needed a bit of adjustment and the non weld through paint stripped off. Plan is to tack it to the car and then trial fit the wing to check fit and positioni...

Re: Vanessa '68 2dr saloon
A year later, I'm back on Vanessa. Both rear wheel arches require repair as neither have flanges for fixing the wings to, and the boot lower section needs replacing as it's heavily patched. Having thought about it I think the best approach is to repair both wing flanges to match the wings, take the ...

Re: Vanessa '68 2dr saloon
So the BGT has been completed - at least it is running and drivable, even if the engine smokes like its laying down a smokescreen  so rebuilding the engine can wait until the winter. So I've reverted to working on Vanessa. I'd got as far as the offside rear wheel arch, where the rear suspension...

Vacuum advance numbers
I'm in the process of repairing a couple of vacuum advance units off Morris Minors ( replacing failed diaphragms), and I'm curious to know what the numbers relate to, eg 5/18/3 and 5/17/10. I've compared the internal springs in the vacuum units which I assume have different compression rates, althou...

Must be me , when I read a new post ( highlighted in red in the ‘ circle ) shouldn’t it then revert to blue !! Am I doing something wrong 🤔 Just tried this - I think you have to reload the front page for it to register and turn blue? Worked for me. Question I have is can you rotate photos you post-...
