Pay as you go.
I just read the article on the BBC news website about Darling Alistair's latest pitch to replace the fuel tax and road tax with a mileage charge. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4610755.stm Would anyone care to suggest the best way of installing satellite tracking to a 1970 four door saloon with the o...

take it apart ,and clean up seal, or new gasket, float might be sticking, While you have got it open, you might want to check that the needle in the top of the chamber isn't worn. To do that, slide the pin that is hold the float out and the needle can then be dropped out. Have a look at the tip of t...

Tilly, love the picture of Gladys! Thanks, isn't she a dish? Mind you, white cars aren't easy to photograph with digital camera. The default seems to be to over expose... good job I have trees in the back yard. Any-hoo, I lucked out on Friday and managed to get hold of a couple of jubilee clips. Th...

The fuel pumps usually have a mesh filter in. Check this isn't missing / removed. My Dad had the fuel pump replaced recently. Now he rates the mechanics that worked on her, but I'm having my doubts with the whole garden hose to air filter modification. I got a package in the mail today from Bull Mo...

Shopping list: -Oil filler cap (with mesh filter) -Carburettor To Engine Breather Tube (or cheap generic length of rubber hose and jubilee clip for the smaller carb breather end - 9.45 for a rubber tube? Outrage!) - And seeing that she is throwing petrol from the float tank again, it wan't just a ca...

I don't suppose anyone happens to have photo of what a 1970 carb, rocker cover, cylindrical crankcase breather, oilcap, garden hose, etc to hand to show me what it should look like? Actually, that would be a useful addition for this website, don't you think? A series of shots of what an original eng...

Re: breathing
Willie (my font of engine knowledge) wrote: TILLY....Your 10V engine prefix is correct for the late 'controlled breathing' type of Minor engine. Okaaayyyy..... You should have a cylindrical breather outlet attached to your front tappet chest cover. That would be the cylindrical thing that sits at th...

Wille said: I have come in a bit late on this one and am not at all sure what model year you have? She is a 1970 4 door. OIL FILLER CAP would have a wire mesh in it to let air in. Nope, no wire mesh. There was another type where the rubber pipe went to a mushroom shaped fitment on the inlet manifold...

There should be a pipe running from that connection to either a pipe on the cylinder side cover or from a pipe on top of the rocker cover at the top of the engine. If that is missing that may explain why your car is lacking a bit of power. Thanks, I know what the rocker cover looks like, but I can'...

Mystery Carb Modification?
I picked Gladys up from the body shop and ran her back home last night. I noticed that she seemed a bit underpowered, but it wasn't a problem seeing as I came back via the backroads. Anyway, I was out today walking the dog when I bumpped into Rob, our local handyman/boat engine repairer. I asked him...

Since our little experience last week on the way to kate's Id certainly recommend you check that the leads all fit snugly on the distributor cap, along with the ends of the leads which fit over the spark plug. Doh!!!! Ok, I came home today to give Gladys a bit of attention. I checked the coo...

Check the thermostat! Mine was broken, which causes the engine to get cold coolant when it doesn't want it! I resisted the temptation yesterday to ask how to check the thermostat and went straight to 'the stack of many manuals' that Dad supplied me with the car. Ok, I'm looking at it as a possibili...

A properly serviced Minor 1000 is capable of 70mph + on the motorway for a couple of hours, so your short jaunt should be well within its capabilities when running correctly. That's what I thought, When I had her running at the top of the speedo briefly (that needle really does swing a lot), she wa...
