Re: Traveller Tuning
The car is back on the road after the upgrade and going well. The improvement in performance is certainly noticeable, but then the engine was in a very poor state before. I am running a K&N cone type Air filter at the moment, with an AAU needle and red spring in the HS4. This runs well, but I ha...

Re: Traveller Tuning
It’s not a burnt valve given that the engine has never run since rebuild. Piston and rings are brand new too

Re: Traveller Tuning
All noted. Thank you. I have tried Easy Start already, but no luck. I have rechecked all the valve clearances again. 0.012 inlet and 0.015 exhaust. I will try a little oil in no 4 cylinder and redo the comp test. As I understand it, it can either be rings, valves or head gasket?

Re: Traveller Tuning
Tried what you suggested to no avail. I have tried it with new petrol in case the old stuff had gone off. Just will not fire at all. I just did compression test, with the engine cold obviously and cylinders 1-3 give around 140 and no 4 gives 30 psi, so something definitely amiss. Not that even that ...

Re: Traveller Tuning
Already done. I never removed the distributor drive, but when I came to do the timing it was out by 180 deg. I set it static on no 1 cylinder and then moved the plug leads until they were correct and in the right order. When the engine was disassembled, I found the distributor flange impossible to r...

Re: Traveller Tuning
The engine is re-installed and everything is connected up. I tried to start it today and it turns over on the starter ok, but there is no sign of it wanting to fire. I have set the valves clearances, checked static ignition timing twice. There is fuel in the float chamber and it is reaching the jet....

Re: Traveller Tuning
I am thinking of making some new ones from the rocker cover cork gasket to see if they fit?

Re: Traveller Tuning
They are the right way. They wouldn't fit the other way round. The seals stand proud 5-6mm above the top of the groove. There is a measured 6-7 mm between the sump flange and the block. I can't see any way that the bolts can be tightened enough to take this up. I did soak the seals in oil prior to fi...

Re: Traveller Tuning
They seem to be. I used oil rather than grease, but they can slide in the grooves slightly.

Re: Traveller Tuning
Bottom end all back together, timing gears and chain all done and cover fitted. Rear engine plate back on and flywheel fitted. I am having a problem with getting the sump back on. I have put the two cork seals in place and trimmed them to 1/16th proud of the flange, but the sump will not bed down so...

Re: Traveller Tuning
The crank and oil pump are now installed and I am now having a problem getting the first piston into the bore. I am using the standard 'ratchet' type ring compressor, but the oil control rings seem to spring out before they go in the bore. I have checked all the ring gaps as you mentioned.

Re: Traveller Tuning
Thanks Phil.
I am now at the stage of fitting rings to pistons and pistons to bores. In Haynes it suggests fitting a ring to the bore and measuring the gap. Does this apply with new pistons and rings?

Re: Traveller Tuning
Update: The engine is out and completely stripped down. The crank is in good condition and just needs a good clean and polish and new bearing shells. The pistons were in a very poor state with 3 out of 4 showing signs of past seizure, with bad vertical scoring. They have been binned and the block ha...

Re: Traveller Tuning
Thanks. Glad I asked.. Interesting that Haynes doesn't make any mention of this in the section on removal without the gearbox?

Re: Traveller Tuning
Engine ready to come out. Got the crane today so out it comes tomorrow. As I have not done this before, do I need to support the gearbox in some way with a jack or similar?

Update
This is my first A-Series overhaul, so all hints and tips welcome. The engine is almost ready for removal. I have stripped all the ancillaries off including the head. A quick inspection of the cylinders shows a lot of oil in them, with pooling on the piston crowns. I am assuming it must be from fail...

Re: Traveller Tuning
I have been trying the mini airbox with the HS2 and it looks like there is insufficient clearance for the choke cable under the bottom of the airbox. It is I think, supposed to enter downwards to the carb through the hole in the lug as shown in the photo. Also, my carb has the diagonal for the mount...

Re: Traveller Tuning
Good idea. Will do that. A question: the round mini airbox has two mounting holes which take the special long internally threaded wing nuts. One goes on the long stud in the 90 degree intake adaptor. Where does the other one go?
