Re: Crank Pulley flew off!

Firstly you will need to take off the timing chain cover to fully see what the damage is and to expose the 'washer'. You do need to remove the timing disc on the rear of the damper pulley otherwise it will foul the timing chain cover. Later timing covers for use with the damper and later type ignit...

Re: Crank Pulley flew off!

if the woodruff key looks to be ok I would leave well alone. You need to remove the disc riveted to the back face of the damper pulley. Just drill of the heads of the three rivets and knock the rivets out. Doing this will not up set the balance of the pulley. The large washer could be the oil throw...

Re: Crank Pulley flew off!

The engine was professionally-built and has been in the car for over a quarter of a century... there certainly was a lock washer there originally but clearly it was lost in the road, when the balancer flew off... Amazingly, the bolt ended up on the panel below the radiator. I've sourced a second-han...

Crank Pulley flew off!

My son was driving the 1275 Minor on Sunday and called me from the side of the road, where he'd broken down. Turns out the bottom pulley (crank pulley) had dropped off the car, at speed. He was on a dual carriageway with a 60 limit but amazingly, found the pulley... and the bolt to hold it on was si...

Re: Mazda rx8 gearbox

The rx8 and lighter mx5 box have integral bell housings, you could make them fit to the engine by getting a new engine backplate made, here's one I did for the a mx5 box. rps20210327_194402.jpg We have tried it in the car but never got it finished, the issue with the mx5 box is finding a suitable c...

Would also need to work out how to drive a speedo (unless using a GPS version - is that MOT legal?)

Re: Mazda rx8 gearbox

Still thinking about this... RX8 Gearbox man is promoting them as a viable alternative to the Ford Type 9... Which raises a number of questions: Which clutch is used in a Type 9 - to - Minor conversion? The Minor one of a Ford one? If a Minor one, then presumably it can also be used for the RX8 conv...

Re: Mazda rx8 gearbox

The RX8 'box - especially the more recent 6-speeder - seems to be pretty popular with Ford types, as a replacement for the Type 9. Apparently, as the number of splines and length of input shaft, as well as the length of the gearbox and position of the gear lever are the same, it's a pretty decent sw...

Wiper sweep

Hi all, I have a '63 with clap-hands wipers. Currently, the wipers are parked just about on the bottom windscreen rubber and sweep up to approx vertical... ie right in the driver's eyeline. I seem to remember that, before I had to remove the rack and clean out all the old concrete (grease) and likew...

Re: 4-speed vs 5-speed 'boxes

According to a handy calculator I found online, going from 4.22 to 3.9 would mean that at 4000 in 4th, I'd be doing 67mph, rather than 62. Going from 4.2 to 3.7 would mean 4000 in 4th would be 70mph... which still means sitting on the Motorway at 3500/4000... Adding the 5th gear, with a 3.7 would gi...

Re: 4-speed vs 5-speed 'boxes

If you want the reliability of a Ford gearbox with synchro on first gear you could always consider the Ford 2000E four speed gearbox. Gearbox availability is relatively good and spares parts are available at a reasonable price. The Ford 2000E gearbox is similar to the Type 9 but without the overdri...

Re: 4-speed vs 5-speed 'boxes

Why not go for the 3.7 diff? I had one on a 1098 and it overgears the car but your 1275 would pull that easily. Fits straight in. I was chatting to someone about it at the Goodwood revival and he definitely suggested I stay away from a 3.7... The 1275 does have better torque but I'm not sure if the...

4-speed vs 5-speed 'boxes

My 1275 convertible still has a standard 4-speed box, which is a little noisy and - with a standard 4.22 rear-end - is also hard work on anything faster than an A road. For ages I've hummed and hahed over fitting either a) a rebuilt Midget box and a 3.9 diff to help with longevity and lower revs at ...

Re: 1275 speedo

My 1275 is on a standard box and 4:22 diff, with 14-inch minilites and 65 series tyres. I had my speedo calibrated when the engine was built, 30 years ago, and it's within 2mph of my GPS speed on Waze or whatever... When I change the diff (or possibly go Ford 5-speed, I'll have it done again... With...

Re: Young driver insurance

Have just been on the phone to FJ...

With their MMOC Young Driver Policy, if he's a club member and owns the car, it's £950+ for a 3000-mile policy.

And car clubs complain that young people aren't becoming classic owners.

Hardly surprising is it?

Young driver insurance

Quick question for everyone - where do you get insurance and how much are people charging. I have a 1275 Minor and it costs me around £90 a year to insure for 6000 miles, with Footman James. When I renewed last summer, I asked them how much it would cost to add my 19-year-old son (1 year of driving)...

Re: Convertible rear springs - 5-leaf or 7-leaf?

Temper will not change. Hooks Law will apply to springs just as it does to spiral springs. Usual checks include ride height and deflection under load. All done with suspension mounting parts in good condition. I posted because you simply assumed, without any evidence of checking. Perhaps it is time...
