Hi,
I was advised when fitting the exhaust downpipe to the manifold, to wind a piece of thick copper wire around the female opening of the downpipe just under the lip. This gives the clamp something to grip on and has always worked for me?

My newly-purchased Moggie Traveller blew it's head gasket on the journey home from the vendor.
