I had fuel starvation caused by using a silicone gasket material on the fuel gauge sender gasket. It expanded to transparent jelly, fell in the tank and blocked the pick-up. Was a b****r to get out 'cos you could barely see it.

Take the thermostat out and try again. They can fail closed.

disagree, without a heated manifold you will get carb icing in winter - also check Vizards' book, he recommends a heated manifold. 30 mpg isn't very good, I get 45 from my van on a run and 40 in commuting.
