Re: Oil pressure too high
What was it before? (When first started after the previous oil change). Was the previous grade 20W? Is this high pressure at tick-over or higher rpm? What is the running pressure when at normal operating temperature (both at idle and rated engine speed as per the manual)? Excessive pressure will obv...

165 section on standard rims? Too big in my opinion. Do ask your insurance company re this modification. You may well find you are not/would not be insured.

Re: ignition light
Keep an eye on the battery - best to disconnect it, if you haven’t already.
Apart from wiring, if you have fitted an alternator (not just re-polarised the dynamo as part of your conversion) a typical fault that could present itself like that is a faulty diode pack.

Re: Multimeter recommendation
[/quote] I think you're potentially causing undue concern, since any reasonable quality electronic device of any kind, that relies on it's internal battery will have a power supply operating range with a 'Low Battery' indication of some sort. People don't put fresh batteries in every time, just beca...

Re: Multimeter recommendation
One more comment that some don’t know/understand. DMMs rely on the internal battery (usually a 9V PP3). Readings can (and will) be affected by that battery as its voltage reduces - giving incorrect readings. Analogue meters often only use a 1.5V cell which is only used for resistance measurements wi...

Re: Multimeter recommendation
The fuse in most digi multi meters (DMM) will only protect the low current circuits (often 200mA or 400mA range) the high current connection will unlikely be fuse protected. Over current on that range will likely result in the meter being ‘fried’.

Re: Stronger Halfshafts
I suffered twisted half-shaft splines in my Landrover but usually not actually broken. I did manage to totally destroy the diff in my Mk1 Cortina (a lot of crown-wheel teeth loose in that diff housing) and I also smashed the gearbox in my Mk1 Escort (a complete cluster change sorted that). I’ve neve...

Re: Sidevalve engine temperature gauge
No particular reason other than measuring the temperature around, or at about, the highest point in the system. Alternatives might depend on what you have available as alternatives and possibly the type of transducer used.

Re: Knocking from engine on medium revs.
Andy, Have you checked the clearance between the exhaust pipe and the body work? Modern replacement pipes can get rather close and if the engine mounts are old and sag a bit the pipe can touch the body work when running under load and give a rattle as the engine leans over slightly from the torque ...

You mean it runs at higher pressure, now, at normal operating temperature? Still too high, IMO.

Re: Knocking from engine on medium revs.
I am just a little surprised of the knock only at certain revs. I would expect a big end to knock under load, particularly while accelerating (not so much off-load). Not saying it’s not a con rod bearing, but just not quite convinced. I might be checking engine mounts or timing chain, but until hear...

Re: Clutch not “working
Anther approach might be to hold the clutch pedal to the floor with a length of four by two (or similar) wedged up against the driver's seat. Might be an idea to disconnect the return spring using that method? Why? As long as the spring is not extended beyond its compliance with Hooke’s Law, it wou...

Re: Oil Pressure Switch (leak)
You miss my point. Oil pump/lube failure at high rpms is usually an unavoidable (by then) catastrophic failure. Deteriorating oil pressure cannot be monitored if it remains just above the warning level. Oil warning lights are considered as ‘idiot lights’, while gauges are fitted for useful informati...

Re: Oil Pressure Switch (leak)
Bill is generally correct, but that is because usually the oil pressure has suddenly fallen to zilch. Plain bearings only need about 5psi to keep them apart; old pressure switches were typically 7psi.
Stick with the idiot light. Ignorance is bliss, as they say.

Most things are fixable - at a price.
Rather depends on a few more details - and the price, of course.
