Re: Timing - how far past TDC?
Rob - thanks for your PM but I can't PM back as it says disabled? Mine is not an impulse magneto it mates to the engine using a vernier disc with a pin in. It is an RF-4. It has a manual retard lever. I was just trying to contact you after your post about Mike's vedette. You were talking out about s...

Re: Timing - how far past TDC?
Hi, sorry to keep asking questions about this obscure engine, but I really do appreciate your help! I have adjusted the timing, and the engine nearly started - on the starter it was keen to run and went by itself a few seconds. I think I still have the timing too far advanced- you can see the mark f...

Re: Timing - how far past TDC?
Thanks, all in correct order. As on my other thread I am having trouble verifying that the mark on the engine crank start wheel (where the fan would be) is indeed TDC.

Timing - how far past TDC?
Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me here... I have the marine version of this engine with a magneto, but leaving the mag aside (there is a good spark at 4 plugs) I am trying to get the timing right to start it. At the moment I have set the spark to occur at TDC, but all I get is the occasional misfir...

Re: vedette mk2 sidevalve quick question
Thanks for the help! I have a manual for the engine but it doesn't talk very much about timing, I have found a workshop manual for the automotive version that is more helpful and between them I can hopefully work it out. Sadly it doesn't have much info on timing the magneto either. The mark on the c...

Re: vedette mk2 sidevalve quick question
Hi, Thanks Mike - PM returned. Yes I think it's TDC - I am trying to marry up tdc with the spark position on the magneto - it then connects a little pin into the timing chain and one does the nut up on the back of the engine. I have just looked carefully at the magneto and seen that it has a little ...

vedette mk2 sidevalve quick question
Hi, Hope this is the right place, I have posed before in this one! I am trying to get the timing right with the magneto and engine and I am just wondering - which is cylinder #1 on the sidevalve engine? And... by the crank start mechanism there is a small solid wheel, on the top of which there is a ...

Re: Marine Engine Help...
Just in case anyone is interested, I have been keeping a blog of the restoration of the boat and the engine (although there is little to do with it really) The boat is nearly finished and I can't wait to get the little Vedette started again! Thanks for all your help so far, I'm sure there will be mo...

Re: Marine Petrol Vedette
Hi there, I also have an old Vedette MK2 engine in my boat - I'm restoring a Fairey day boat. It's been a steep learning curve but its a lovely little engine. Does yours have a petrol pump in the fuel line? Mine has an SU pump, it makes a very quiet ticking when it is running but worth investigating...

Re: Marine Engine Help...
Hi Nic, any air filter type like the old austin healy sprite would suffice. They have a gauze that acts as a flame trap. Early sunbeam alpines are the same, there are plenty around. Cheers smithskids. :D Great call - found just the one I think! Thanks very much indeed :-) Does anyone know hot to ge...

Re: Marine Engine Help...
Hi, I wondered if it was a Morris Steering wheel! Yes I'd be really happy for you to come and see - she's at harleyford marina. I'm around most evenings and weekends, is there a PM system on here and I'll send you my number? I've started to do some work on the engine and electrical system - removed ...

Re: Marine Engine Help...
Thanks very much for all the help so far guys - what a great community! Thanks for the boat rally pointer Mike - they were really keen that the boat is included as there are very few left apparently and still fewer boats with the morris engine. Iv'e found a company who repair magnetos and will do mi...

Re: Marine Engine Help...
Thanks I will have a look for one :-) Didn't realize that they could be heated either! Yes an interesting project indeed - I was really worried that the oil leak was terminal until I found the leak from the filter. It otherwise seems in really good condition. It's been quite neglected for a few year...

Re: Marine Engine Help...
That's it - thanks for the pics! That is exactly my engine, as you say mine has some extra pipework etc. I'll have a look at the date stamp when I am next at the marina. The boat is a 1959 Fairey Faun, built of laminated Agba ply. Ours is hull 3 so a prototype we think. It's been through a fair bit ...

Marine Engine Help...
Hi everyone... We've just purchased a 1959 wooden launch that was fitted with a Morris engine and I wonder if anyone would be able to help with a few questions. First, some help with the age of the engine - I haven't found a number but photo is below. It's sidevalve and has a solex updraught carb. I...
