Re: Engine cut out and backfire

All I can think of is that the faulty condenser could lead to fuel not being burnt properly hence the petrol smell. I think the mixture is correct as I've checked the plugs and they are all the right colour.

Re: Engine cut out and backfire

Okay, I'll get hold of a compression tester and do it when I get back to England. Strangely, since I replaced the condenser, the car has stopped smelling of petrol when I drive it. Is this possible or is it just a coincidence?

Re: Engine cut out and backfire

I did a compression check a few weeks ago when it wasn't pulling at all. It was horrendously low (about 40). After adjusting the valve clearances it was fine on all cylinders. I can't remember the exact figures but I remember them being close to what they should be.

Re: Engine cut out and backfire

I've now been driving the car a fair amount for the past few days and it's not played up once. I assume that means the condenser was the culprit. I've been looking at the electronic 45d distributors and I am very tempted. I suspect that my car doesn't have as much power as it should. It struggles qu...

Re: Engine cut out and backfire

My only worry is that something might go wrong with the electronic ignition and that it's not as easy to repair as points. I don't really want to have to carry a spare electronic unit. Although if they are really reliable then I suppose I wouldn't need to worry. Plus, I do sort of like having origin...

Re: Engine cut out and backfire

Have the electronic ignition systems improved now? When I've looked at older threads, researching electronic ignition, you used to recommend sticking with points bmc. Are the current electronic ones more reliable?

Re: Engine cut out and backfire

This one comes with points and the (apparently) more reliable red rotor arm http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Morris-Minor-Distributor-45D-Points-NEW-Full-Warranty-/110622554622?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item19c19e39fe . What are the advantages of the 45d over the 25d? Is it just a more ...

Re: Engine cut out and backfire

I may well do. Is the 45d superior to the 25d and are the new ones as good as the old? Also, are they easy to fit and set up? I was thinking of getting a new points distributor rather than electronic. I've heard stories about electronic units failing. Also, I (strangely) like the idea of my car havi...

Re: Engine cut out and backfire

I've now fitted the new condenser and taken it on quite a tough drive (lots of hills etc.). It's been fine so far and hasn't been jerking like it was yesterday so fingers crossed it was the condenser. It also seems to have slightly more power uphill. I'm still worried that it's just temporarily beha...

Re: Engine cut out and backfire

I've just bought a new condenser, I haven't fitted it yet though. When I had a look in the engine, I noticed that the fan belt is very loose. The fan can be easily turned by hand without moving the belt at all and when the engine is running, it slips and wobbles about. I'll tighten it up later when ...

Re: Engine cut out and backfire

Yeah yeah, alright bmc  . I meant is it the overwhelming probability that the condenser has gone or one of many possibilities? I'll have a look soon and report back. The annoying things is that it's only doing it intermittently. If it was constant then it would be easier to diagnose. I.e. It's ...

Re: Engine cut out and backfire

I've not driven it since moving the air intake. Is it likely that that could cause such a big problem? Does a faulty condenser typically cause engine jerking like that? I have changed the condenser recently but I suppose it can be faulty. I've still got the old one so I'll try putting that back in t...

Re: Engine cut out and backfire

I've driven it today and it's been doing it again :/ It hasn't backfired but the engine has been occasionally juddering and kangarooing. It suddenly starts jerking along (almost as if you were pushing the clutch up and down quickly) and losing power so it has to be really revved to keep going. Then ...

Re: Engine cut out and backfire

I drove it around a lot yesterday and yet it warm up before I pulled off each time. It drove fine and didn't do it again. BMC, does ice form more readily in the carb than elsewhere? It didn't seem cold enough for ice here yesterday.

Re: Engine cut out and backfire

What could cause that and how would I check? I've done the clearances and all the valves seemed to be working fine. Would that explain it backfiring and then immediately returning to normal? It felt like the engine sneezed and was then fine!

Thanks

Engine cut out and backfire

Hi, I've been driving my Traveller a lot for the past few days after getting it back from ESM (It needed quite a bit of work, both trunnions, brakes, rear suspension and a few other things). It's been running fine (apart from lacking a bit of power uphill, I'm thinking of playing with the timing) an...

Re: Squeaking at back

I've just sprayed it with WD40 and the noise has stopped, at least it's stopped when I push on the wing. I'll take it for a drive soon to see.

Okay, I'll try that. You don't think the wheel's likely to fall off then?!
