Re: Leak free Moggie! 1970 2-door

There you go, you learn something new every day, as they say! Sorry about the goo but the ridge on the face of the sump mating surface that presses into the gasket had worn away in places. Had it been a new tray then I would have foresaken the evil paste. Talking of paste, I'll give the car a good &...

Re: Leak free Moggie! 1970 2-door

Thanks. I have recently cleaned out the breather system and fitted a new oil filler cap. The breather does seem prone to clogging up if the car is used sparingly and for short trips in the cold weather. Mine lives outside under a cover which doesn't help, but I just make a point of cleaning out the ...

Leak free Moggie! 1970 2-door

Yes, it can be done! I was told to live with oil leaks as they are good for the underside of the car blah blah blah. However, the constant drip of oil off the front and back of the sump really started to get to me after a while and I finally endeavoured to do something about it. A new neoprene gaske...

Hi. Double sided sticky neoprene tape tape works well. Plenty available on line.

Martin, while you are under there it might be an idea to fit a gearbox steady cable; from your photos it looks like yours is missing...

Re: Particles in gearbox oil

Thanks, Phil. All I need to do now is wait until item number 69 ( the bolt that goes with it) turns up at the next oil change!

Re: Particles in gearbox oil

Thanks. Refilled and carrying on! I'll worry about it when I see more than a hedgehog's' worth on the drain plug. Now, where did that washer come from, I wonder......

Particles in gearbox oil

I have just drained the gearbox oil from my 1970 2-door and found that it contained a fair few small particles of what I assume is metal, about the cosistency of ground pepper. There was also a small shake proof washer sitting in the bottom of the drain plug along with some fine sludge. I have owned...

Re: rear shock absorber links

Hi BMC I took your advice and bought a bottle of the 40W compressor oil that you posted a link to earlier. I drained the front dampers on the car and filled them with the valves in, not out. It was all a bit fiddly and messy until I used a little oil can with a flexible spout! Plenty went in and I h...

Re: driver seat wobble

Hi. My Moggie recently failed it's mot because the driver's seat wobbled from side to side. The reason was that the seat tube had fractured under the floor clamps. Might be an idea to take the clamps off and have a look. The cure for mine was to insert and weld in place a suitable bar inside the sea...

Minor 1000 VKJ 923H history?

Hi All I have recently purchased this car. Sadly it came with no history bar a few old MOTs and a copy of a heritage certificate. The chap I bought it from had owned it for about 6 years and barely driven it. He told me that the previous owner had spent a lot of money restoring it but had no documen...

Cure for that annoying squeak from front of engine

I recently bought my first Minor from an elderly gent in Clacton. It had done 30 miles since it's last service/mot a year ago and seemed to have been well cared for. So much so that I paid him, got in it and drove 75 miles down the A120 to Welwyn. Nothing broke! However, whenever the car was idling ...
