Re: No engine number
Frankly if there is no number at all on the new engine I would leave the record as it is. Trying to get DVLA to amend anything can be a complete can of worms and there is nothing that can be proved to be wrong.

A waste of a nice old car, and for a result that was entirely predictable.

Re: Do you guys feel safe driving your Moggy??
When my daughter was approaching driving age I was offered a free Metro needing a few odd jobs. I’m glad I didn’t bother after seeing that!
We all have to decide what risks we are prepared to accept. As I approach 70 I still enjoy motorcycling. The armchair can wait.

Marketing men in the 60s would have struggled to find a catchy slogan for the ‘MG of restricted growth’.

A late 62 car might well be registered in 63. When sales were slow new cars could sit around for months.

Re: Tiny brakes
The small brakes are fine as long as they’re in good condition. A lot of Minors with little use or long storage have sticking wheel cylinders.

Probably because they are produced in very small numbers nowadays. I don’t know of any major industry that uses BSF now. Or conversely you might say that metric items seem cheap because of vast production volumes.

As for Facebook the data collection aspect has to be borne in mind and I certainly wouldn’t put any personal details on it. I think it’s harmless enough if you just use it to natter about old motors.

Since the forum carries no adverts I assume it is paid for by members’ subs and thus we are providing a public service. I find that quite a few clubs have all or most of their site available to members only.

Re: Gearbox
I have assembled a 948 box with an 803 rear end and change mechanism. It all slots together without modification. You need to use the right rods as the 803 has a lift and engage reverse while the 948 engages against a spring.
A 1098/803 conversion is more complicated as some machining is required.

Re: Lumpy running on choke
I start mine from cold with the choke full out. Soon after starting the engine, as you say, will run rough as the extra fuel for starting is no longer needed. I push the knob halfway in which eases the rich mixture but still gives an increased tickover speed and keeps it running smoothly to pull awa...

I hadn’t come across 12 Volt Planet before but the range on their website looks good. Their socket with clips is actually stated to be suitable for inflators but not lighters. It costs £8. That’ll teach me to be a tightwad

Re: Cigarette Lighter Central Connection
I can’t advise on the connector size you will need, so many manufacturers produce these sockets and I wouldn’t assume that they are all a standard fitting. You could try measuring it with a micrometer, or maybe just buy a pack of assorted connectors.

Re: Cigarette Lighter Central Connection
Cigarette lighters, ooh don’t get me started! I have an electric tyre pump which plugs into a lighter socket. It was original equipment with a Vauxhall Corsa. Unfortunately the Corsa is the only vehicle we have with a suitable socket. Browsing eBay I spotted a socket with wires and clips to connect ...

Re: Sticky speedo - lubricate?
Thanks George I’ll bear this in mind if it sticks at rest again. The cable was lubricated when I assembled it and I think it is in good condition. A poor cable will more likely cause erratic swinging of the needle rather than sticking.
