Magnetos are still used in things like Lawn Mowers. They are very reliable and produce about 20,000 volts. Small aircraft engines still use them because of their reliability. I think that basically the coil system is now used because of cost.

Along with the chart on my previous post, another chart I came across at the same time when I was looking into Nuts and Bolts a couple of years ago is on: http://www.gomog.com/allmorgan/whitworth.html At the foot of the document, which is interesting in itself, is a link to "Whitworth Compariso...

If you own a reasonable vernier gauge you can identify a bolt/set screw by the diameter of the Head across the flats. This is possible since the formulae for head size is different for each thread type. This site has a handy table you can use: http://www.team.net/sol/tech/SpannerSize.html Using this...

What I think you appear to be saying is that you want the DB10 function of flashing the brake lights without using the DB10 itself. The rear bulb is a 12 volt 5/21 unit. The 5 watt filament has its own supply for the rear light and the 21 watt filament has effectively two power supplies. (1) A const...

Chilly,

Don't write off the quarterlight clipon mirrors too soon. I've had mine for 30,000 miles and have found them to be fine. Including continental driving. Because they are so close to you you get a good view IMHO.

My brother, an ex car salesman, tells me that older convertible cars can also have a very high turnover rate, caused by people liking the idea in summer and finding them draughty, etc in winter.

But for all that, I'd still like a nice one though 8)

I'll third it. I just hope you can get a large enough sample to be able to draw conclusions. Anyway a PM will be on its way.

I don't suppose you could be using coils designed for Ballast Resistors in a 12 volt car could you?

What about 16s then Kevin? Remember those? wasn't 16 2/3 supposed to be for speech? I think I only got one of those and If I remember correctly it was in the form of one of the playable postcards that you used to be able to write on and send through the post. The trouble was that the tracking weigh...

regarding Vikingminors post, I have dual horns and one of mine stopped working recently. It would work if it was directly connected to the battery, and a continuity test showed that there was nothing wrong with the cars wiring. Adjusting the horn points as described by Bigginger solved the problem. ...

I think what Ray is saying is that because the Midget Steering Rack is in front of the Kingpins it needs to reverse the action to steer the car. i.e a normal RHD minor rack pushes the wheels to steer and a RHD midget rack pulls the wheels to steer. So, if you then reverse the action of a RHD midget ...

James, Perhaps others, like me, think that while we support what you are doing in principle we need something more concrete before we give money. It is not unreasonable for it to be suggested that a first post to this forum asking for money by PayPal could be interpreted as a scam. So give us some m...

Willie,

I agree with you. The practical proof of this were the old vacuum powered windscreen wipers. Cruising along a flat road they raced across the screen. They slowed down while accelerating and nearly stopped going up hills!

Ray, I take your point about the PayPal account but I suspect that James just saw this as a convenient way for 3rd parties to forward money to him. I may be being naive, but I think that perhaps too much is being read into the PayPal aspect of what he is doing. Is there another way of sending him mo...
