Re: Petrol can safety

LobbyLudd - thanks for the update on ethanol. I use fuel in Lancashire, but it must only be a matter of time before ethanol free fuel will be unavailable everywhere. I would like to carry some spare fuel (gauge is not very accurate) but it sounds like it may be more trouble than it's worth. I might ...

Re: Petrol can safety

Thanks for the warning. I don't have one but was planning on getting one in the near future. It should be easy to keep a can away from UV, but less easy to keep it away from petrol :D I suppose you could use the premium grade which has no ethanol (at the moment), but it might be cheaper in the long ...

Re: Steering wheel lock

I use a Disklock and it really does a fantastic job, both as a deterrent and as lock that is really difficult to remove without a key. As others have noted though, it is quite large and heavy. You will need to think about where it will go while you are driving. Some use the passenger footwell, but I...

Re: Selfies

My wife and I often glance across to admire your traveller when we pass - no charge for just looking I hope! Last week we even went past in our 1961 2 door saloon rather than our modern car. Still glanced across. You seem to always get the same parking space so we know just when to look! Cheers Steve

Re: New pump

I recently had an electronic SU pump fitted, but it only lasted about 100 miles before it stopped working. Naturally the spare that I was carrying which was a known working older style points one worked without fault. A replacement new electronic one was given to me by the supplier along with a seco...

Re: Thoughts on 1275 engine and 5 speed gearbox

Yep, security is high on the list of priorities. Steering wheel clamp (a good one) as a deterrent and a cut out switch. Can't decide yet between battery and fuel pump cutout. Pros and cons to both. Battery could be bypassed fairly easily I suppose, fuel pump and you will probably find your car a few...

Re: Thoughts on 1275 engine and 5 speed gearbox

Thanks BMC

Sound advice, and already on my list of things to do during the restoration. We are intending to use the car as much as possible, and hoping in the future as our only car, so thinking now of things to make it "future proof".

Cheers

Re: Thoughts on 1275 engine and 5 speed gearbox

I've decided not to go with the 1275 and Toyota 'box, based on price and not knowing how well they have been treated in the past. Photos will be taken at each stage. The spec for the engine, 'box etc has all been agreed, rebore, crank regrind, etc, etc. I think the price is fair for the work that wi...

Re: Thoughts on 1275 engine and 5 speed gearbox

Hi Beero

Thanks for your input. Would I be happy? Probably not, it is a lot of money. But compared to the £5k at least one restorer would want for a recon 1275 and 5 speed (Ford) 'box ......

I will ponder some more.

Re: Thoughts on 1275 engine and 5 speed gearbox

Hi BMC I originally considered the bigger engine/5 speed box because I anticipate enough motorway driving to make it a worthwhile upgrade, it's just a question of whether the cost can be justified. Your alternative approach is another way forward, I agree, and for a lot less money. I'll give it some...

Re: Thoughts on 1275 engine and 5 speed gearbox

Hi BMC Ok, thanks again for your evaluation of the "value for money" side of this offer. Looking through other posts in the forum I can see that the cost of the parts themselves are a lot less, but as you say, paying for somebody's labour to do the work is never reflected in the final valu...

Re: Thoughts on 1275 engine and 5 speed gearbox

BMC Thanks for the thoughts on price. Effectively he is saving £1k recon costs, and getting a further £2k. From my side I am giving up reconditioned items and getting "used" (run in?) but arguably "better" items for an extra £2k cost. I'm sure you'll understand if I don't say who...

Thoughts on 1275 engine and 5 speed gearbox

Hello This is my first post, so please be gentle! After a lot of thought, (and with plenty of encouragement from the wife :) ), I have decided to take the plunge and buy a 2 door saloon. I've done plenty of research and gone through the options available and decided to go ahead with a full bare meta...
