Re: Unknown Cylinder Head
Are you sure its not "1456"? as David Vizards "Tuning the A series Engine" List a cylinder head with part number 12A 1456. According to the book that cylinder head was originally fitted to the 948cc morris minor, and has a slightly small inlet valve than the normal 1098cc head (1...

Re: Which brand for electronic Ignition
I fitted a kit from simonbbc a few years ago, like others have said there is only one extra wire to attach. The main difference I noticed is how quickly it starts, less than one second of the starter motor turning on a warm day! If you don't keep your oil topped up the engine fires before the oil pr...

Re: What is this tool for?
Internal diameter is 1 3/8", and tube is 3" long. The slot is 1/4" wide and 1/2" deep, and appears to have been stamped out, rather than being done with a hacksaw which I would have expected from a home made tool. No numbers or markings on it. Evidence of paint on the inside, bla...

Re: What is this tool for?
Woodruff key is likely I guess, I wonder if it is just for turning a crankshaft while assembling the engine? Seems a bit over the top to make a tool for it though.

What is this tool for?
So, what is this for? It came with a job lot of SU carburettors, although I don't think it has anything to do with carbs. It is approx 1 1/4" diameter, and has a small slot at the end, only one slot which is unusual. If its home made then it has been made quite well, looks like mild steel with ...

Re: H1/H2 carb
H2 carb might have mounting holes further apart than the H1, so may not fit the manifold. I have no experience of the 803cc engines, but I imagine the bigger carb would only give you more power at high rpm, something which I would be keen to avoid with an 803cc! In terms of the engine "running ...

So your oil pressure warning light is now behaving exactly the same as the full beam light? are they both on or off at the same time?

True it has taken me far too long to fix that! New cylinder is actually in place but not started the dreaded brake bleeding yet.

Re: Mystery rotor arm, what distributor has this one?
Battery terminal was quite loose, could be easily turned by hand and was quite dirty, I think this was giving intermittent power and causing many of the problems. The wiring was a mess so I decided not to dig a hole and make it worse. Battery terminal bodge sent them on their way but it needed a lot...

Re: Mystery rotor arm, what distributor has this one?
hello bmcecosse, with your usual attention to detail as always! Probably an spi then, no carb but definitely a dizzy present. I took pity on someone stuck at the side of the road, opened the bonnet expecting something pretty similar to the morris minor engine and got a bit of a shock! wires everywhe...

Re: LCB
I can also highly recommend the manifold LCB manifold and exhaust system for performance, huge improvement BUT it is incredibly loud, think modern motorbike type loud! You will end up being very light on the throttle and changing gear early just to stop the noise! Also it no longer sounds like a Mor...

Re: Mystery rotor arm, what distributor has this one?
My understanding of the distributor is that the cam on the spindle determines at what point in time the contacts touch and the spark jumps, the arm needs to be in contact with the correct spark plug metal terminal, but how far along the arm it happens to be is not too important. If the arm was not i...

Re: Please help suggest which paint colour I need
I had not considered that, is there anyway to determine what chemistry of paint it is? I have spoken with the owner and they had a scratch repaired before at a garage, it is very well done and completely invisible so we are going to contact them and see how they chose the paint colour.

Re: Mystery rotor arm, what distributor has this one?
I found that ESM sell a red performance rotor arm that looks like it is the same as the old one, although it is supposed to be for the same distributor. I wonder if the new rotor arm I bought is a bit poor on the quality control in terms of dimensions.

Re: Mystery rotor arm, what distributor has this one?
Not a bad idea of course! However the owner is planning to sell the car soon and wants to advertise it having just had a good service. Given the likely cost of the rotor arm and time to install it I think its worth doing!

Please help suggest which paint colour I need
Hello, Long time since I posted here! I am helping someone touch up small nicks in the paintwork of a 1963 2 door saloon. We initially thought it was clipper blue, but it looks like it has been resprayed a slightly lighter blue at some point, as the clipper blue touch up looks too dark. The floors a...

Mystery rotor arm, what distributor has this one?
Hello people, Long time since I posted here, I am helping someone service a 1963 2 door saloon with a 948cc engine. We ordered a service kit, but it appears the rotor arm is an unusual type, so the standard rotor arm does not physically fit on the distributor. The current arm (which works fine) is o...

Re: Replacing leaf springs, improving ride quality
Well I am not sure about the poly bushes, from reading about them it seems they improve the "road holding" at the expense of "ride comfort". Although Ive always though the suspension was poor just due to the age and design of the car, didnt realize until recently how low the susp...

Thanks, I will wire brush the locating plates on the car and see what condition they are in.
