Re: YAY! IT RUNS!....sort of...kind of....almost
I had a friend who knows more about cars than I do look at it and he said it was the timing :-? So I taped my phone to the rearview mirror and shot a video of me trying to start it, so you guys can actually see it start and help me out. the link to the video is: http://youtu.be/emZnnmS5Bzg I have th...

YAY! IT RUNS!....sort of...kind of....almost
Finally got the time to work on my 1959 minor, and After fiddling around with the distributer for a while, it started ... after a few pulls on the starter, It ran perfectly, but any pressure on the gas kills it. I have also been running it without the air filter on top,( I don't think that's a probl...

extremely weak spark
The spark on my morris project was pretty good, but I went out today after a few days of not working on it, and the spark is barely there. I can easily hold the spark plug wire and touch the spark plug with my finger, and only barely feel the spark. Under the distributor cap, I get spark between tho...

Re: engine not starting, advice needed.
The new points came, which made me happy, since I was expecting a much longer wait. However they did nothing to make the pump work any better. :( I am now looking at a replacement pump, but as far as small electric pumps go, they are really quite expensive. Has anybody replaced theirs with a modern,...

Re: engine not starting, advice needed.
well, the filter is clean and so are the points. But the one point on top looked like the arm was slightly bent, it was not touching the other point unless pushed on. I tried to straighten it, but snappee it on accident. I guess while I wait on the new points I will work on the next problem. The eng...

Re: engine not starting, advice needed.
It does not pump at all without manual assistance. It ticked pretty fast, until it started pumping fuel, and then it became useless.
Even with the outlet disconnected it doesn't do anything.

Re: engine not starting, advice needed.
there is a british auto shop only a few miles away, but their prices are outrageous. Plus shipping, I can get parts for half the price they sell them for. I was looking at alternator and online I can get one for $50, or a kit for about $90. They offer one for $200.

Re: engine not starting, advice needed.
Just finished rubbing fine sandpaper and tinfoil between the points, no change. I took out the filter, but it looks brand new, not even a smudge on it, Then I looked around the back, there is a red wire that looks like it has broken, but then "patched" by just being twisted back together. ...

Re: engine not starting, advice needed.
Thanks everyone, I bought a new set of points, and now I just have to wait the two weeks for them to ship from England. I made a carburetor gasket, but it is still not running. Apparently the fuel pump is only pumping up a slow drizzle of fuel, and that's only if I take off the cover and manually he...

Re: engine not starting, advice needed.
woohoo! I'm now getting spark and the timing looks correct. Thankyou everybody! :D It turns out that one of the top hat insulators was missing, I made do with a bit of cling wrap, and now it is working fine. However, after the pistons fire once or twice, a bunch of smoke shoots out between the carbu...

Re: engine not starting, advice needed.
Sorry for not responding, I haven't been able to work on it for the past day or two. I set the gap to 15 thousandths, and then I tried to get the points to spark by opening them and closing them with a screwdriver, and they did nothing. The feed to the distributor is alive and strong, (sparks when i...

Re: different headlight plugs
I got two of these, I'll just get/fabricate whichever other parts I need. http://www.ebay.com/itm/330967311774?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 also bought a tester so I can figure out which wire is which. Thanks for the wiring diagram, I've got a pretty nice collection of them...

Re: engine not starting, advice needed.
everything looks ok in the distributor, but how can it be the distributor's problem if the coil isn't making any spark? I know that it's never the coil, but could it be the coil?

Re: engine not starting, advice needed.
stupid question incoming:bmcecosse wrote:It's NEVER the coil.... The fact it is getting hot means it IS working. But is probably passing current all the time. Look to the points installation (are they correctly insulated) - and the 15 thou gap........
the points are in the distributor, correct?

Re: engine not starting, advice needed.
I have systematically installed all the systems and components, yet when I tried to start it, it turns over, but nothing else happens. :( What systems and components have you installed? everything with a hose connected to it, or involved with the engine. radiator, dynamo, coil, carburetor, heater, ...

CAR NEEDS 1) fuel 2)spark 3) oxygen all at the right time ,pour a half a cup of petrol /or easy start into the carb ,will it now start or backfire? check for a spark ,by holding the king lead from the coil to within a millimetre of the block ? does it spark ,if so try the same with a spark plug see...

Yet another newbie question. Re: Fuel pump problem.
cleaned the whole thing out and it works well now, clicks pretty slow once it starts working on fuel, but I think that's normal.
Now the S.U. carburetor keeps overflowing, so I am going to take apart the float valve, clean it, put it back together and see if that fixes it.

different headlight plugs
One headlight has a slightly different plug than the other, and all I have are the bowls, so what other parts do I need for a 1959 Morris Minor 1000 to complete the headlights? There are sealed headlights, non sealed headlights, and about 5 parts to each headlight. Can I buy headlights in a kit? or ...
