To allow the caster of the steering to do its job the steering must not be too tight.
The caster setting of the steering allows the steering to find its centre position and so keep the vehicle on the straight.
The vehicle steering must be able to self centre without help from the driver.

Re: Engine block
The engine is 1098cc with a 12A497 block but is not standard. The front engine plate with strengthening channel is off a later MG Midget/Sprite so could have been fitted with a Duplex set up. The 1098cc 12G202 head will fit on the block shown without any modification. The plug next to the coolant dr...

It could well be that the steering box is too tight.

Re: Thread sizes
Bill My neighbour is restoring a vintage Douglas motorcycle and he has been round to see me to discuss and identify the special Douglas threads and how to get round the problem. The nearest we could get was BSCY. I have some BSCY taps and dies but not the ones he wanted. I recommended Tracy Tools as...

If you are replacing the Philips headed countersunk screws with the hexagon headed bolts you may find that the door will not close
The Philips headed screws were fitted for a reason.

Re: DVLA and tourer/electric conversions
It is all getting too complicated.
I have also noticed an upsurge in the numbers of part completed kit cars for sale on 'e' bay possibly because of the increase of red tape/regulations.

Re: 1098cc rear axle casing.
Just taken delivery of a very good 1098cc rear axle casing. Many thanks to all who replied to my request for an axle casing. :D Now I can get on with work of building up the axle with a 4.8 diff, special half-shafts, Wolseley 1500 rear brakes and the more positive location spacers between axle and s...

Re: Chassis stiffness.
In my opinion and experience I would say that the 2 door shell has more torsional and beam resistance than the 4 door.
The stiffness, torsional strength and beam resistance of my Minor is greatly improved by the fitment of a six point Safety Devices full roll gage.

Re: Damper Nut
The factory fitted nuts are 1/2" BSF. Later nuts can be 1/2" UNF as the threads on the pattern trunnion pins are UNF. As an aside I find the later pattern upper UNF trunnion pins with the one piece thick washer to be better made than the genuine BMC article. If you are going to replace the...

Re: Can no one provide a gearbox and brake fluid extension filler pipe
Yes it is suitable for Minors with drum brakes.
The kit is only suitable for original type master cylinders. It is not suitable for after market/pattern type master cylinders.

Re: Electric water pumps
The main reasons I fitted a electric water pump were: Quicker warm up as the coolant is not circulated until it needs to be. I gained at least 4 bhp. As the radiator is at the rear of the car I need to have a remote pump fitted. Notwithstanding and subsequent to the above I have now also fitted a no...

Ingles49 Just to be absolutely sure - are you describing the front brakes or rear brakes even though your post is titled 'Rear Brakes'? From your initial description I considered that you were describing the rear brakes. If you are describing the front brakes then you have a lazy or seized wheel cyl...

The cylinder has to be able to slide in the backplate so as to centralise the shoes in the drum. The snail adjuster will only adjust the shoe against the snail adjuster. The brake pedal has to be pressed down the centralise the shoes in the drum. The snail adjuster can then be adjusted again and aga...

Re: Chrome rocker cover no breather
Geoberni Many thanks for the information regarding the plastic spacers. The plastic spacers I removed were the figure of 8 type. Whilst not coming into direct contact with the fuel as they are the right side of the diaphragm I thought it prudent to change the figure of eight spacers to the round bra...
