Re: Exhaust Fumes.. Mini
Well test drive revealed no fumes after altering the seal so i have my fingers crossed. Its not that the fumes were visible as such but miore that the air got rather unpleasant. I could definitely see a change in the air in the rear of the car. Difficult to describe but if you have ever been in a cl...

Re: Exhaust Fumes.. Mini
Even more reason to not make blunt comments but proof read and maintain basic civility. Anyway, the window theory proved correct. last Sunday i took the Mini up to 70 mph on the dual carriageway and kept the window shut. No fumes. Then i opened the window and instantly smoke filled up the cabin. I s...

Re: Exhaust Fumes.. Mini
But, Les. I asked a question relating to exhaust fumes and gave as much info as possible to help people make a diagnosis. What i got was advice that didn't relate to this but seemed to be someone adding 2 and 2 to make 5. I clearly stated the engine was rebuilt so it should have been evident that it...

Re: Exhaust Fumes.. Mini
Sadly this is the world we live in. I have had PM's here and on other forums from people over the years who have actually stopped using them due to the unfortunate attitude of some of the users who feel the need to make chippy remarks or such. I don't think that that is fair or a good thing at all, ...

Re: Exhaust Fumes.. Mini
Ok well defend away but i do happen to think that while any advice is welcomed to anyone usng a forum, making blunt comments of this kind in general to someone hinting that they haven't done their rebuild properly and making assumptions that their quality of workmanship is poor without even knowing ...

Re: Exhaust Fumes.. Mini
Aggrieved? Perhaps a bit cross at the implication that i had not built an engine properly and then telling me it needed loving attention. I came on here for help and a chat with like minded enthusiasts to solve a problem, not to defend my engine!! Perhaps techical advice should be tempered with cons...

Re: Exhaust Fumes.. Mini
Blimey Phil!! I would like to thank you for your input and you definitely win the long service Blue Peter badge or whatever you feel you need but my engine DOES NOT need loving attention. I know my way around an A Series quite well too and this one has been built well. I know because i did it. I cou...

Re: Exhaust Fumes.. Mini
All being well, there should be some pics appearing as attachments showing the tailpipe and how much it protrudes from under the bumper, plus the bottom of the gearbox/pipe joint there, Nice and clean Phil!! lol Just checked and there is a small drip of oil on the bottom of the box and a ten pence s...

Re: Exhaust Fumes.. Mini
Thanks for the comments, although i have to disagree Phil; In 30 plus years of owning countless A series engined cars i have never had a Mini that doesn't leak. I have also rebuilt many and i did this one, took my time and used great care on assembly ; and it still leaked! Pretty much only from the ...

Exhaust Fumes.. Mini
I have a prob that is causing me to head scratch somewhat. be interested to know what you all think. Its not on any of my Minors but on my 1974 Mini that has an Austin 1300 1293 engine. Car was rebuilt by me two years ago and engine was rebored 20 thou oversize. and rebuilt etc. Unleaded head, singl...

Re: Rebored Engine burning Oil
Hi there and thanks for the helpful comments. bit surprised and dismayed at the latest from BMC there but i guess it takes all sorts. Far from ignoring anyone i was very glad of the advice actually so its a shame we can't all be polite. Anyway, i decided after reading all the various posts, to pull ...

Re: Rebored Engine burning Oil
No, of course not. THIS engine has been rebored.
What i said was that with many of the other engines ive built over the years, if the bores have been fine and i've just re-ringed them then i honed those but any o had rebored i didn't bother with the honing.
Hope thats clear

Re: Rebored Engine burning Oil
I'm pretty confident the rings were installed the correct way around. I took my time, as i always do, with this sort of thing and followed the instruction sheet supplied. I gave the pistons to the engineer for him to check the ring grooves and general condition of the pistons. If there had been exce...

Re: Rebored Engine burning Oil
Yes, thats my suspicion. Have to say i will hone the bores with an engine if i re-ring it and it hasn't been rebored but i have never bothered to hone the bores with an engine ive had bored out and ive never had this sort of problem before. After the initial running in oil the engines have usually b...

Re: Rebored Engine burning Oil
Well, i have sort of been doing that already with little improvement so far and the oil HAS gone down...
But, do you think it could still be the rings given what ive said?

Re: Rebored Engine burning Oil
Ok, further to the last posts. I have just removed all four plugs with the engine hot. All are normal in colour; ie. light grey/brown in the middle. Some black around the outer edge where the threads go. But they appear quite normal to me. I have also taken off the crank breather and re-checked it a...

I meant remove the oil filler cap on the rocker cover, not the rocker cover itself.

Re: Rebored Engine burning Oil
OK, i drained the running in oil and refilled with 20w50 and have covered about 70 odd miles plus so now the engine has done 200 miles since rebuild. The engine is using less oil; ie less of a smokescreen but its still burning it, so much so that every trip means your clothes end up stinking of oil ...
