Jonathan, you should ALWAYS "chock and block" whenever working with a jacked vehicle...
axle stands are best, but make sure that whatever you use is stable.
handbrake on, in gear and a chock behind/infront of wheel.

KIFE...If the car really is £6,500 then It should be absolutely perfect, you could get an excellent one for half of that price in the UK.
