New coil fitted at weekend. Initial 'test' looks promising. Only had time to do about 5/6 miles but no trouble. Thanks all for the various suggestions. I suspect that if it is still conks out next time I'm out it could be the head gasket. But fingers crossed.

1963 Morris, 1098 engine. I've tried to explain the problem as fully as possible. Also to say what I've done thus far.... On turning on ignition petrol pump ticks away until full.
