Re: Subaru engine conversion?

Some further research, yet to be confirmed, indicates that the Subaru EJ25 etc. on Toyota W58 etc. gearbox combination mentioned before will just fit ahead of the steering rack, starter and all, if the engine is shoved as far forward as it can go. It would mean moving the radiator forwards into the ...

Re: Subaru engine conversion?

Thanks!

Looks like an EA to me, i.e. pushrod, judging by the carb induction. I don't know how the exhaust porting works on those.

No idea; or even whether or not it's in serious production. It's a Weslake design, apparently.

Re: Subaru engine conversion?

Here's a perfect engine for a diesel Minor: http://www.bwmribs.co.uk/files//M-100%20Diesel%20Engine/BWM%20Diesel%20M-100%20Engine.jpg BWM M-100 opposed-piston 2-stroke diesel marine engine: 1332cc, 100bhp@4800rpm, 165lbs, 22½" x 24" x 17". One would just have to find a way to mate it ...

Re: What Engine? If you had the choice..........

Over a year later, I know, but I recently came across this: http://www.bwmribs.co.uk/files//M-100%20Diesel%20Engine/BWM%20Diesel%20M-100%20Engine.jpg BWM M-100 2-stroke opposed-piston marine diesel; 1332cc, 100bhp@4800rpm, 575mm long, 612mm wide, 75kg. If one could find a way to rig an automotive cl...

Re: Subaru engine conversion?

That'd be closer to 250-300bhp @ 4500-5000rpm if built to typical automotive tune. I've heard of Antipodean sports-racing specials powered by these sorts of engines, installed upside-down to get the ports in more convenient places. Something I'd like to see in a Minor is a horizontal 2-stroke diesel...

Re: Subaru engine conversion?

That appears to be a Franklin O-200 or related aircraft engine: http://www.vectorsite.net/Yefnk_1m.jpg It is effectively two-thirds of the Franklin flat-six in the rear of the Tucker Torpedo, another car with an horizontally-opposed engine at the wrong end. There was a very strong image in the publi...

Re: Subaru engine conversion?

Well, it could be said that the Tatra T57 and Steyr 55 were better Beetles than the Beetle, both of them being the right way round.

Re: Subaru engine conversion?

I couldn't find out how the Alfa powered van was done, except that some who saw it in the metal report that the exhaust system hangs very low. I suspect that it does everything it needs to do below the plane of the bottom of the chassis legs. The exhaust port/chassis leg thing isn't a case of poor m...

Like I could pick one up at any local breakers! The VW is the closest in spec and character, but 400-600cc bigger.

Re: Subaru engine conversion?

I've just joined this forum specifically to reply to this, as I've put quite a bit of research into this swop. It seems a natural, as both the Subaru and Alfasud engines are roughly the shape of the Minor engine compartment and a useful margin smaller all round. There are a few problems, though. The...
