Re: Fly wheel
I bought a used 1098 flywheel off the shelf from Bullmotif a couple of weeks ago it was perfectly ok. I have still got the 948 flywheel which was working fine I just wanted to use a 1098 clutch as my warmed over 1098 is probably around 60 horses and was getting a bit much for the little clutch. It h...

Re: 1098/948 clutch swap?
Great thanks Phil Looks like i have the 1098 fork. What is the difference between a 1098 and 948 back plate? Anyone got a 1098 flywheel and backplate spare? I can pick up within 30 miles of Reading or send a courier to collect. Doesnt seem to be any on ebay. Annoying thing is i had them some years a...

1098/948 clutch swap?
Im running a 54 Minor as a daily, it is running a mildly tuned 1098 with a ribbed case box. Clutch started to slip recently so i have just taken the old one out, to find that it is fitted with a 948 clutch (probably why my 60 odd horse 1098 is causing it to slip) To run a 1098 clutch i know i need t...

Re: white wall flaps
I had some, about 20 years ago on an Anglia, after about 1000 miles they started gouging out the sidewalls of the tyres very dangerous and cost me a set of tyres. In my opinion, they also look stupid on radial tyres and they don't suit English cars of the period, often seen on E-type jags and Sunbeam...

Re: Cruising speed ?
For regular lengthy motorway trips I recomend a 3.9 Diff or a 5 speed conversion. The stock one in your van is designed for dragging heavy loads around town. Or you can cruise at 45 - 50 everywhere to save your ears/engine which if Oz is anything like the UK is a lethal Speed on Motorways where most...

Parts quality again (Rubber hoses)
I re-comissioned my Minor over the winter including fitting new hoses. When checking it over yesterday I noticed that the top and bottom hoses are starting to perish where they are connected to the rad and block. I bought the more expensive "Kevlar" re-enforced hoses as well. Not as bad as...

Re: no more MOT for pre 60 cars
Que? The point was more about the hypothetical case of a car with defective brakes causing an accident, not a comment on their original efficacy! I had to show where my replacement engine came from and was perfectly happy to do so. I also had to have a letter to say it had been installed to a roadw...

Re: no more MOT for pre 60 cars
Most of the proper mechanic run MOT stations where I live have closed or stopped doing MOT's because they can't compete with the fast fit no win no fee £35 MOT stations. These in the main are staffed by £7.50/ hour trainee mechanics whose training mostly consists of learning where to plug the comput...

Re: no more MOT for pre 60 cars
Well I think it's great! It will help promote older cars and reduces a lot of red tape and a test that was less and less applicable. As for the condition or road-worthiness of cars I see that it will make little difference. I host our branch mechanics days and I can say that whether a car has an MO...

Re: Upgrade prices
Talking of labour rates,I popped into our local gents hairdressers (barbers for you old ones). It is a small shop staffed by one person, the owner. I was in the chair for no more than ten minutes..cost £9.00. If on a Saturday morning he brought his car round to my workshop at home and I say checked ...

Re: Upgrade prices
I agree those prices sound steep for simple jobs but Morris minor specialist prices are insignificant compared to Moderns. Your main dealer wouldn't fit a light bulb for less than £25.00. I was quoted £280 + VAT to change the glow plugs in my wifes car, job cost me £18.98 in parts and took less than...

Re: heavy clutch (1098cc)
I've recently fitted a new return spring from a Minor specialist and it is way to heavy it is about 4 times as stiff as the corroded original I replaced.
Any ideas on where a lighter spring can be sourced.
May try stretching it a bit to lose some of the tension.
