Yes I am referring to the vertical (packing) side as the wide side. But as you point out and as I now understand this needs to be wide enough to give a good seal. Thanks for the Workshop Manual diagram and details. I will

Yes I am fitting the long side into the groove but the cork seems to be very wide. ( 10 mm ). The Moss one

shown looks as though its the correct size so may have to order another set from them. Andy

I have just received a set of sump gaskets from ESM trying to sort out an oil leak. However the cork gaskets for the ends of the sump seem too wide. Many thanks for your interesting information. What made the engine low compression? When I have an engine rebuild I would like to make it high compression. Is this just a change of pistons plus any other worn parts renewed.

I have an EX MOD Army Traveller. The engine number is 10V/189E/L45838. As I understand it this is a low
compression engine. What difference does this make and what should the readings be on a compression test?
The mileage is coming up to 97000. Andy

I need to replace the valve stem o rings. I see that Bull Motif gives a cup seal and EMS a spring type as new items instead of the old type o ring. Which is the best type to fit or should I stick to the old type? Do the new ones fit on the same way and place as the old type ? Advice much appreciated...

There is no smoke when the engine is hot , the oil filler cap off and the engine reved. The head bolts are OK. I put an unleaded head on because at the time I thought it might help if I sold the traveller. It did seem to make it run better though ! Its looking like the valve guide seals need looking...

I put a new unleaded head on 3000 miles ago from EMS. I think this should have had new oil seals on. You
are right I will have to carry out a major overhaul soon but would like to keep it going for the time being.

The engine does not seem to use an excessive amount of oil.I will carry out the tests tomorrow and report

There is blue smoke from the exhaust on start up but not seen when running. The car goes OK and pulls well with no apparent problems. The engine and gear box are on the original mileage of 97000. Is the smoke on starting the start of something big and is there anything worth doing at this stage? Andy.

Just seeing if anyone has had a problem with wood splitting. The screw heads are worn and will not take a screw driver. There are some larger bolt type screws which can be gripped OK. Andy.

Marky B. The problem lies in the horn push although its a new one. Will check the spring length and contact with the
base of the horn push. The horn works OK when carrying out all the other tests you recommended.
