Just been informed that halfords do a good exhaust manifold paint for £7 - should do the job

Well now the engine is finished. It's all nice and green - bmc green of course. My least favourite bit - is the rusty brown exhaust manifold. Bmc - got the oil pressure gauge so will take your advice on that. Will have a hunt this weekend for starter motor. Based in Nottingham. Happy to spend up to 15/20 quid if anyone has got one that works. Not sure about dishing out on a alternator, I think I might just run a bungee cord from the crank pulley to the water pump since it's just temporary.

Thanks chesney sounds like a good idea with the fuel. Saves me dishing out on a fuel pump, will spend the money on a starter instead

Thanks Katy. Where does the idler pulley fit? II assume it's to tension the fan belt of I chose not to have a dynamo/alternator?

Also would disconnecting the battery from the ignition coil not do the same as having a switch in the line?

Incredibily, very litte wear on the rocker. Just had to buy a new shaft. I think one of the oil holes was blocked but all cleaned out now.

Thank chris, Yes, looked into it a bit more and sounds like a new shaft will suffice. I'll just have check there's no play in the rockers when I re-fit.

Scrap the last comment, looks like it's going to cost about £60 for a new rocker assembly. Seems like it costs around £10 for a new shaft, and new bushes £1.25 each.

Anyone got any ideas how I'd go about removing the bushes and reinstalling new ones? Assuming a new bush is needed....

Thanks Chris, yes it's quite likely that it's been run without oil getting to the bush. When I bought the engine, it had little or no oil in it. Do you think it's worth replacing the rocker assembly as a hole? Judging by the depth of wear, I guess there's gona be a fair bit of play in the bush.

I notice the grooves where the rocker arms go are identical to those in each corresponding rocker bush, so I assume this is for oil as opposed to being worn? I found the best way to clear the waterways is with a steam cleaner. I had the same problem, but it seemed to loosen the sludge. I used a screwdriver to try and break through the drain hole whilst blasting steam in the other end, after a couple of minutes, steam was blasting out all over. Result! Ne...

Possibly a stupid question but how are you supposed to protect some parts of the engine from rust. I.e most of the outside of the engine is painted.
