Re: Tuning woes
Well observed, but It has been connected to the canister since the engine was fitted. The vacuum advance was fitted but is now plugged.

Re: Tuning woes
Some good suggestions, thanks, but the saga continues... I've now removed the carb & checked thoroughly, including refitting the choke linkage which was a bit sticky, and changing the needle (I thought the original was possibly not quite straight, although it moved ok). I've tightened the manifo...

Re: UJ too big for my prop?
I don't give up easily, but fitting the UJs was one of the few jobs I've had outside help with. £30 + VAT two years ago at a local specialist, including balancing. PM me if you happen to be within reach of Leeds and would like details.

Tuning woes
I'm trying to set up my rebuilt 1275 Midget engine with an HS4 carb rebuilt with Burlen parts and modified to non Waxstat. I'm going to have it set up on a rolling road, as I need someone more competent than me with access to a range of needles, but I want to get it running smoothly enough for me to...

Re: front w/screen fitting
I did have to scratch my head a bit when I fitted mine, although I haven't fitted one before. Basically there are two narrow slots and one wider. The wider slot is for the plastic trim and goes on the outside. The narrower slots are for the glass and the frame - I fitted mine to the glass first, wit...

Re: Midget 1275 gearlever
Very useful, thanks all. I think the plan is to see how it drives before removing the cover and taking the stick out to measure.

Midget 1275 gearlever
A recent thread mentioned that a Midget 1275 box needed a different gear lever than the Minor 1098. I've not been able to fully test my 1275 box, with 1098 lever, since rebuilding it, other than reverse and first in and out of the garage. It seems to select the other gears ok, but I'm now worried it...

Re: Rear wheelarch bodgery
Mike, Frustrating though it is, you have to remember that on a sixty year old car this bodging is likely to have been done at the stage when it was an old banger being nursed from MoT to MoT. Back in the day there simply weren't amateurs with the skills we have acquired, or the internet for the info...

Re: New member saying "Hello"
I don't remember them ever being black and white - and I should be something of an authority, having had an important role at Lancashire Police Headquarters in Hutton in 1965 when the attached article says they were introduced (I was the paper boy who delivered the evening paper to the canteen :) ) ...

Re: Mg Midget 1275 gearbox rebuild
You are clearly a braver person than me, I was frightened to death of putting a mark on the main shaft and you have yours clamped in a vice and a G clamp as well. :D Only sat across the jaws of the vice, not clamped, and the tiny G clamp was gently tightened enough to stop the ring escaping while I...

I managed without any special tools - but very difficult and if I'd know about this I'd have happily spent the £26!

Mine came from Steve Foreman at Woodies three or four years ago, don't know where he sourced them from. Not a great photo, but think you can see the lip you are looking for.

Re: 1275 block rebuild potential...
My 1275 Midget engine apears to have been fitted with liners at the factory and subsequently bored to +030. It is a thick flange with the casting window, so probably a CE - number lost as usual!

Re: Rocker cover plate
Slightly irrelevant, as I can see this is for an earlier car, but for the benefit of others the rocker cover plates for 1098 engines were glued, not riveted. According to Ray Newell's bible!

Re: Why is this rubbing the back of my wheel?
Don't even think about driving it! Worn trunnions and swivel pins are the reason so many older people ask "do the wheels still fall off?"

Re: Choke lever swap
I fitted the same one last week (didn't manage to repair the one I'd messed up ) but I had to reduce the length of the outer cable to allow the inner to reach from the bracket to the lever.

Re: Poor quality thrust washers & oil pumps
The supplier of my diaphragm, a well established Landrover specialist, advertised it as new, not NOS. Didn't quibble about a refund, though, and didn't want it back! I've still got it if anyone wants it...

Re: Poor quality thrust washers & oil pumps
Slight digression on NOS. I bought what I thought was a new SU fuel pump diaphragm, because I wanted to do a comprehensive precautionary rebuild and also thought that a new diaphragm would be more ethanol resistant. When it arrived the box looked quite old - careful examination of the label showed i...

Thanks, that's easily reached. I was in Padiham not long ago collecting a classical guitar from a chap called Carl, who turned out to be a Morris owner. Don't suppose you know him?

Re: Rolling road in the north
Thanks guys, very helpful. Southam Mini sounds like the right sort of place and the location isn't out of the question once I'm allowed to stay with my friends in Banbury, whenever that will be. JJ - that's very kind of you and if I don't get sorted elsewhere I may well take you up on it. I'm planni...
