Re: oil pressure problem or not?

Hello Vigil, if the pressure runs at 60lbs per square inch at idle, then the relief valve is lifting at that pressure, when the pressure drops it will just stay shut so replacing it will make no difference, i.e the pressure is too low to unseat the valve so changing it will make no difference. Do yo...

Re: oil pressure problem or not?

Hello Vigil, it is unlikely that the pressure relief valve is the cause of the problem. 20 psi is low when running at a good cruising speed, what oil do you use, it should be a 20/50 Multigrade, thinner modern oils are not ideal. When you changed the crankshaft bearings, I take it the crank itself i...

Re: Spigot bearing

Hello Rob, firstly the rod and grease is as good a method as any, as long as your rod is a snug fit. Is the bearing solid i.e. a bush or a proper bearing? If the latter once removed , measure your Fiats input shaft and take the bearing and the measurement to a bearing supplier and see if they can pr...

Re: paint removal en-masse

Hello all, i read a post earlier today on the MIG welding forum, which basically said that Nitromors is of little use these days. The poster came up with an alternative which he said really did the job as it contains Methylene Chloride. http://www.artemisproducts.co.uk/boden-paint-and-glue-stripper-...

Hello PC_Hater,

"The third and successful attempt used data from the Lucas Distributor list,"

The manufacturer would have spent hours on a dynamometer to get the best average setting, so it's sensible to copy that, it's known to work.

Hello Marky,

"Black box is a term used by engineers to describe boxes of a very dark hue"

Not always, aviation black boxes are orange. I was told that they (Flight data recorders) were thought of by a Dr. Edwin Black, but I don't know if that's true or not?

Re: Thread info for gearstick plate bolts

Hello Les/Kevin, trying to drill a couple of damaged threads with a hand drill, especially in aluminium, is likely to end up causing more damage. Possibly if the drill is ground negative rake you may get away with it, but it's likely to snatch and drag itself into the hole. A proper sized tap to cle...

Hello Ratrodmog,

it doesn't matter what car it is, excess offset is bad; aren't Volswagens used just for posing?

Re: Long run improves running - why?

Hello David,

cars that do a lot of short runs tend to coke up a bit inside which a good run clears out. Cars that are driven hard do seem to run better.

Hello Whoosh,

"She is missing the dizzy and the spark plugs at the moment but if you spot anything else please let me know"

The distributor is in place, what else is missing is the coil (which fits on top of the dynamo), distributor cap, High tension leads, with plug caps.

Hello BMCE,

normal engineering practice is to use a coarse thread in casting, but BMC and Triumph use fine threads in lots of cases even in aluminium?

Re: Thread info for gearstick plate bolts

Hello Les, personally I wouldn't use a drill first but try and re tap it to the original size. Failing that fit a 1/4" UNF Recoil (Helicoil type repair, cheaper and easier to get than Helicoils). With that no drilling is needed. To prevent unwanted swarf getting where it shouldn't, grease the t...

Hello Toginthe mog, you may already know this, but the rear trailing arms are not very effective being connected as they are. Ideally they should be straight forward from the suspension. I would expect a lot of rear wheel steering with that layout especially as you want to put so much power through ...

Re: My soon to be modified Morris

Hello Edward, just be aware that with such an offset on the front wheels, going through puddles at the side of the road can drag the car quickly to the left. Either avoid them if possible, and\or hold the wheel very firmly. The reason is the contact point of the tyre is far from the centre of the st...

Re: New vacuum advance unit, no difference

Hello Gatsby, that is the problem with fitting a different carburettor. When the manufacturer sets up an engine the carburettor and the ignition are optimised together. The reason for the vacuum advance is to enable the car to run correctly with the carburettor set weak at cruising speed to improve ...

Hello Custom job,

to be fair, a lot of vintage car owners use it due to the lack of corrosion it causes unlike water. If you have a rare or unique car I can see it's value there.

Re: positive/negative earth- how to tell

Hello Andy, you will need to ensure that the polarity is correct; most electronic devices cannot be connected to reverse polarity without damage. I don't understand Dicky's advice of using a fuse of a lower rating than the device it powers, that ensures the fuse will blow for no good reason. Fuses p...

I've read a bit about it but do not see any advantages over conventional coolant for me and a tremendous disadvantage should a hose fail and dump all that expensive coolant.

Re: No spark from coil.

Hello Maraman45, yes, you should get a spark if the ignition is on and the coil is connected. CB is the connection to the coil (white\black wire), and the SW should have 12 volts on it with the ignition on. Look at your battery , there is a + (positive) and a - (negative) near the terminals, just lo...
