Thanks MoggyTech, the exhaust pipe to manifoild joint is blowing slightly, so I'll check around all that, it's recently had a new copper head gasket, so I hope it isn't that

Thoughts on strange engine noise and auto advance

Two questions please  First how can I test the automatic advance and retard, I need to develop some suction obviously but how much will move the dizzy? Second I have a persistent knock from the engine, I think it's more than a tappet (and yes I have adjusted them) and less than a big end any i...

The Traveller will cope with London driving OK, my wife regularly drives hers from Gloucestershire into London and then around London. The key is to make sure the brake drums are round (old ones go oval) and keep the brakes well maintained. Most of the rest will be fine. The big issue is weather. If...

Many thanks for all your advice bmcecosse. Torqued them all to 44 last night and they all went by slightly varying amounts, probably should have put new studs and nuts in really and will do if there's a next time! I'll let it run for a couple of weeks and then recheck and hopefully that'll be it for...

Thanks! It just needs the exhaust clamp redoing now, the threads failed when I put it back.

I'll let it run gently for a day or two and then torque it down again. Bendy seems pretty close to zero at rest and I hadn't thought of that!

OK, so the new gasket is fitted and Maggie will reverse up the hill out of the garage with no problems! The book says torque the head bolts to 40 ft/lbs which I've done with my bendy torque wrench (not ideal I know) it didn't seem over tight is there any advice on whether they should be tighter? I w...

What a coincidence. My car's called Maggie, and I had a head gasket failure in exactly the same place 2 weeks ago. And my first name's John....

Many thanks bmcecosse. I'm away now until Tuesday so ESM should have the bits on my doorstep by then.

It's an unleaded head fitted 15 years ago and I hadn't considered trying to grind hardened valve seats.

Well the head's off and apart from a beige deposit on all of them (light on the exhaust and dark on the inlet) the valves look complete and there' s an eighth inch gap in the gasket between 3 and 4, so I think that's pretty clear! Having removed the old gasket from the head there's a load of remnant...

Valves or head gasket

Maggie suddenly started really loud "pinking" type noise under load and lost power. On reaching home compression test showed 150 on numbers 1 and 2 and nothing worth noting on numbers 3 and 4. I'm assuming therefore either major head gasket failure (no evidence to see) or simultaneous valv...

If you've still got a dynamo, new fanbelt is almost certainly the answer. If you've had an alternator conversion it may be that the pulleys don't quite line up. I had to put spacer washes on the alternator mountings to move the alternator forward just a tiny bit ( about an eighth of an inch) and tha...

Are you absolutely sure you've checked the fuel flow. If you have a non standard lockable fuel cap it can cause airlocks, your symptons would be a pretty severe case though, so I think I fall on the side of electical connections and wiring if coil and condenser and rotor arm are known to be good.

Disposing of a small amount of brake fluid

Having finally successfully bled the brakes, I've got about half a jam jar of brake fluid. Can I mix this with the old engine oil and pour the lot into the recycle tank at the dump (sorry recycling centre) or does it have to be dealt with separately and if so how??

If it reliably stops every 5 mins then I agree wholeheartedly with bmcecosse, coil is the most likely explanation if you have eliminated fuel flow, given that you already changed the condenser.

OK. I've had another go and I've read Jonathan and bmcecosse posts so thanks to all for advice. I've bled with shoes adjusted up and handbrake off. The pedal takes three pumps to go solid after it's "rested" from the bleeding operations and still takes the same three pumps half an hour lat...
