Nuts?

I have just discovered what looks like wheel nuts attaching the rear damper link arms to the body of my '57 minor saloon. Does this type of nut sound right? or should it be something more standard as nuts go? Any feedback will help clear my confusion.

Wouldn't there be a corresponding drop in the radiator level as well if the head gasket has failed?

engine number APJM-L-28292,
1957, 948cc.
The tappet chest breather is a swans neck type coming out of the front tappet cover and leads straight down with the end about level with the bottom of the sump.

Sorry, "...adjacent to spacer" should be "...adjacent to gasket" (think one thing, write another).

Willie, I don't have any inlet at all on the air filter. The inlet is on the elbow joint under the air filter, just above and adjacent to the spacer. Obviously engine fumes travel the short distance straight into the carb from here. I assumed this was a standard type of setup, but maybe wrong.

Thanks for the explanation Willie. My Morry has an inlet on the tappet chest cover and the outlet pipe from the rocker cover connects at a point between the air filter and the carb. The filler cap is the solid type. Not sure if this is the right mix of bits now.

Hi Willie, forgive my ignorance, but could you explain why the right filler caps need to be fitted as per your quote below. Thanks. Jono [If your car vents into the AIR FILTER then you should have an inlet pipe on the tappet chest cover and a SOLID (no filter)oil filler cap. If your car vents into t...

timing and power loss

Does anyone know how much power loss would occur, if after a timing chain replacement, it was discovered that there was a misalignment by half a tooth? Would power loss be noticeable or not? This is for a 948cc minor.

Lucky sod. I think your 5 hour trip cost less than my 2 minute one this morning. It should have been a fifteen minute trip to work, but once I hit 50mph the bonnet flipped up and rested on the windscreen. Just got the quote to fix the horrible damage. $640. Lesson: When working on the engine, always...

done

I finally got it off. A large spanner, a large hammer and on bash number 13 it came free. This was done with engine in car by the way, and after I decided to leave it for the night (frayed patience and all).

Help. pulley nut

I am hoping to change the timing chain on my '57 saloon, but can't get past the nut holding the crank pulley on. It's stuck fast and all the little tricks I've been told won't budge it. The lock tabs are bent back, I've got it in gear, bashed the nut a few times to free any stickyness up, used CRC, ...

I adjusted them while they were cold and there's no contact with the rocker cover. If there is wear on the rocker pad etc, could the tolerance be moved down to 10 thou for instance, to quieten things without causing problems?

valve clearances

I have just set the valve clearances on my '57 Minor (948cc) to 12 thou right through, as per the hand book I have, and it's really rattly, even after the engine has reached operating temp when you would have thought expansion would quieten it off a bit. I talked to one guy who had an older MG I thi...

How much are new dampers in the UK? (I have a '57 saloon).
I have relatives who should be able to send some over if the price is OK.

I wish dampers were 18 quid on exchange in New Zealand. I've been quoted $280 for a pair!

leaking

I have cleaned and refilled the dampers with the right fluid, but as they were a bit neglected, they are dripping fluid a bit more than I would like. :( I was told to clean them out and replace the fluid with a thicker type to help stop the leaking, if I didn't want to spend the money on new or rebu...

rear dampers

The rear dampers on my Morry have not been looked at for around 10 years. Is it worth taking them off to inspect and refill with fluid, or should I just leave well enough alone if there is no immediate problem. (There is a possibility they have lost fluid, but not sure how much. Back end is a little...

rotor arm

Try replacing the rotor arm. Your problem sounds very much like the problem I had and which was discussed at some length a few weeks ago on this message board. If your rotor is a newish one and made from black coloured plastic, get rid of it and get hold of an old one from the 60's or earlier. The m...

vappets?

Valves, tappets.It's all tho confuthing.
I did mean valves when referring to the torque wrench, and of course would adjust tappets at the same time, as they are a bit rattley.
I have located a Haynes manual for lending, so will go from there.
Thanks for all advice
