I had this problem it was the connection to the steering column slip ring.

I like that what type and where did you get the bulbs from ?

We have a painted banjo wheel (cream colour) in our old english white 59 four door. I painted it with three coats of acrylic paint after keying the wheel with some wet n dry paper.
