cheers for your help guys. had some friendly men check the car and they managed to sort it. it seems that i had already fixed that problem, but the main reason for it running badly was that the dizzy was shot. rattling bits inside and a vacuum unit that was dead. so that's sorted. anyway just waitin...

cheers for that. i've had another look at the float and it seems fine. the float level also seems fine. I'm thinking it's more likely to be the jet/needle, because as soon as i accelerate, the fuel pump gets going again. i had the mixture checked a couple of weeks back, but i'm wondering whether the...

fuel pump/ carb
hi there i'm having some trouble with my 1098cc as usual. The fuel pump was ticking away like mad, even with just the ignition on. sometimes that stops (depending on whether i play around with the jet and float chamber float). but as soon as i start the engine the fuel pump starts ticking again. lik...

cheers guys for the replies. drove out to halfords after all as i couldn't find anywhere else round here and after about 45 minutes of driving (yes i got lost) i got there and the bloke was kind enough to suggest testing the battery before replacing it. the tester showed the battery to be in good co...

starter motor
i'm in durham at uni and the cold is getting to my car i think. i use the car for fairly short journeys which might not be helping either. i tried starting my car once the frost had started and the starter motor did nothing . it did a sort of err noise, trying to move, the ignition light went off an...

fan
hi guys. just been fiddling about on my maurice and came up with a brilliant scheme. if you feel that most of the air coming out of the fan is lost through the front, i.e. doesn't get to the windscreen, try gluing some modified windscreen wiper blade rubber to the bottom of the flap, so there is mor...

well i've had between 4 and five coils in the last year. all modern ones except for the current one. they all overheated and when i took one of them apart i saw that one of the wires going to the spade terminal was burnt through. these were all budget modern coils from halfords or other such places....

engine steady cable
hi everyone, i've been looking at my car and have noticed that i don't have an engine steady cable. now i know that this was only installed after a certain time, but mine's a '68 traveller and i think this should have one. i can see this 'hole' in one of the crossbar supports for the gearbox, that l...

there i was adjusting the mixture which i'd realised was too rich when i had to give my brother a lift to the station. the car was running fine. i switched it off for about 30 minutes then restarted and drove off. got to the bottom of the drive when the car decided to misfire completely and run real...

i need help
hi there, been a while. i have a couple of questions which some of you may be able to help me with. firstly: When my Traveller is fairly warm i get pretty bad clutch judder when driving off. it's not the kind of judder where the engine vibrates, but the one where the rear doors and windows shake rea...

gearbox removal
just a tip for anyone who feels like taking the gearbox out without removing engine and without having a ramp or pit: don't do it. took me all day to get the thing out and then in. nightmare. lots of swearing and bruises involved. and another tip: do not let the speedo pinion-gear fall into gearbox ...

broken starter motor
my starter motor got jammed the other day so I turned the square nut and it was freed. However it then began spinning freely. so I took it off yesterday and to my surprise both the barrel and the main spring were broken!! I was quite shocked that these pieces of serious metal were just completely br...

speedometer not working
hi, my speedo stopped working a few months or so ago and i've decided to fix it. it went wrong before and i fixed it by taking the drive out of the gearbox. i then saw that the plastic drive had come loose. but then it came off again. i wanted to know if i should buy a whole new drive and plastic th...

sorry about the name guys, i've changed it now. the spring is not worn or broken or anything, so it isn't that. I will try all the other suggested tests, thanks. willie you asked whether the gear box housing is ribbed or not? could you tell me why this matters? sorry if i'm not a professional. am on...
