Re: Anyone use an aftermarket pancake air filter

There were no extraneous noises from the engine at any time. Pistons were fine and there wasn't any damage to the inlet valve either. The only casualty I could find was the oil seal (top hat type) on that single valve. Despite extensive searching I couldn't find anything wrong with the rest of the h...

Anyone use an aftermarket pancake air filter

A tale of caution. I have those on my moggy and 1800 landcrab. This happened on the Landcrab but could equally well have been the Moggy. A few weeks ago the engine went 'bang' and the car ground to a halt. The RAC kindly returned it to barracks for me. Head off, and I found a bolt lodged under No 1 ...

Re: Head Gasket? Burnt Valves?

A final update on this. Having tried everything else but car still not running correctly, I took the head off and ....... burnt out exhaust valves on pots 2 and 3. I had a spare head (here's one I made earlier) so fitted that and she fired up and runs fine :D

Re: Sympathetic mechanic in North East wanted

If you are prepared to buy your own parts and take them along, Ian Barker at New Road Garage, Thornley (near Peterlee) is an old school Morris trained mechanic and bodywork guy (his family have owned the garage since 1927 - opened as Morris and Riley agents) 01429820302

Re: Head Gasket? Burnt Valves?

Fresh set of eyes on the problem and points set :D

Still no improvement though :(

Further investigation revealed the fuel pump was drawing in air. Hopefully that will be the cause of the problem. We will see

I am in Newcastle upon Tyne btw

Re: Head Gasket? Burnt Valves?

Thanks Andrew have had the dashpot off and cleaned the inside, and the needle and it made no difference. Started to change points and condenser but pain prevented me from finishing. I should have recovered enough in a couple of days to finish the job and hopefully crack the problem. Distributor is a...

Re: Head Gasket? Burnt Valves?

Many thanks for that. Car doesn't have the original SU fuel pump and the fuel chamber on carb is full. Will check carb piston (I can manage that unaided) and change the condenser

Head Gasket? Burnt Valves?

Car has been running fine. Parked up after a run no problems. 4 days later went to take it out. It started fine but as soon as I asked for power the engine died. It will start no problem. tick over no problem but as soon as I press accelerator the engine speeds up briefly then dies. I have a clear f...

Re: help to remove roof lining

Did mine about 7 years ago. I cut out the rear rubber and used a new one when refitting. The thing I found most difficult was getting the cable that runs along each side of the headlining level, with no wrinkles in the headlining. For refitting the rear screen I just soaked the new rubber in hot soa...

Re: Mini & Morris Minor bosses

Yes Minor and Mini steering wheels have identical splines and are interchangeable - had a wheel I used on a Moggy, MGB, Marina, Riley Elf and Mini Clubman before it fell to bits (the wheel, not the clubman!)

Re: engine cutting out when hot

Now there's a thing. My SU pump turned up it toes about 9 years ago and I fitted an electric one. It has served me well, although recently I have only checked its flow when cold. Hopefully I will be well enough in a couple of days to check further but I also have my landcrab to prepare for annual sh...

The old one was totally knackered - the auto advance/retard fell off and the innards had seen better days. The new one worked perfectly all last summer

Re: engine cutting out when hot

When it stops - immediately pour some petrol down the carb throat and crank it - if it starts - the problem is petrol supply. If not - it's a sparks problem. Now that is one thing I haven't done - thanks Are you certain that the replacement parts are OK? Can you prove by using on another vehicle. W...

Re: engine cutting out when hot

I thought that and it does the same with the petrol tank cap removed. No fuel line blockage as have disconnected the line and pumped fuel through into a container. This one has me scratching my head!

engine cutting out when hot

have an annoying problem which is now getting beyond a joke. Car (1965 1098) runs fine for first 15 miles or so then splutters to a standstill. Turn off, leave for 5 mins and she will start and run for half a mile before spluttering to a stop again. It is not he fuel pump, coil, condenser, rotor arm,...
