Internal Door Lock Catch wont come out

I've come unstuck on one of the smallest components in a Morris Minor and its driving me crazy I'm trying to take out the door handle lock assembly on the left hand side door. In order to do that I have to remove the internal lock catch. I've taken out the spring clip but will it budge? will it b***...

Re: Chassis paint

Ive used it, on suspensions parts and odds and ends like the gearbox mounting brackets. It works well, can be sprayed. one thing is I find the gloss a bit too glossy and the satin, a bit too matt. Frost are a good company and give a good service

Re: 1098cc engine rebuild markings on the cylinder top

How come it's so oily? There's hardly any coke on the piston crowns, where's the oil coming from?

1098cc engine rebuild markings on the cylinder top

I thought I'd share my engine rebuild on here. This is it a standard 1098cc engine from a 1970 Traveller. PXL_20210110_151938552.jpg It ran ok, but with wandering timing and also low compression on the back cylinder, It didn't smoke noticeably. I got the cylinder head off and the tops of the pistons...

Re: 1098 Gearbox Rebuild

Good advice thanks guys, the new/old shaft fitted beautifully. I fitted a new layshaft and gear as well. PXL_20210110_173344866.jpg Well chuffed with the results, my first gearbox. I managed to fire one of the springs from the anti rattle plungers on the remote control across the garage, so had to r...

Re: 1098 Gearbox Rebuild

New/old reverse idler and shaft fitted with no problems courtesy of Mirabelle Classic Cars. I think what happened was that the old shaft was oversized and forced into the box when it was built which explains why the old shaft was so difficult to get out and it might explain why the bush in the idler...

Re: 1098 Gearbox Rebuild

The reverse idler shaft...the very worn reverse idler, is very tight in the hole in the casing. PXL_20201215_214045865.jpg My measurements (taken with cheap eBay vernier callipers) for the shaft are 0.559" - 0.5615" which is 9/16" if my maths is right the hole in the casing reads 0.53...

Re: 1098 Gearbox Rebuild

I have the gearbox apart, so far so good. the front cover is leaky and the first motion shaft has lots of runout. New bearing PXL_20201212_180616984.jpg the selector fork rod detent grooves seem fine to me PXL_20201212_180557539.jpg There's 8 thou endfloat in the laygear thrust washers, I need to se...

Re: 1098 Gearbox Rebuild

Hello Don,

Do you have details of the tool? Whilst I am planning to avoid separating the two parts I may well wind up doing it inadvertantly.

1098 Gearbox Rebuild

I'm just starting out rebuilding the gearbox on my 1970 Traveller. I'd driven it for a while before the restoration and it wasn't bad it was not too noisy and it didn't jump out of gear. It did, however, make a terrible growling roaring noise in 1st and reverse. This I understand is worn layshaft an...

Re: Torsion Bar replacement without the engine

I would suggest that the bottom trunnion is assembled first with the top trunnion disconnected from top arm pin.
Aaaah! now why didn't I think of that? Thanks Phil

Torsion Bar replacement without the engine

I'm restoring a 1970 Traveller and I've hit a couple of snags with the torsion bar replacement. There's no engine in the car so no counterweight when it comes to pre-loading the torsion bar I tried putting my plasma cutter in the engine bay (about 40-50kgs) But it just lifts the whole car up PXL_202...

Re: Minor rust in seam, worth cutting it back?

I'd really get stuck in with a twisted wire brush on an angle grinder all along that seam and see if the rust goes any further. I agree with your idea of cutting off the flange on the lower sill repair panel and welding on the edge to the floor. It was all one pressing originally when the car was bu...
