Front brake cylinder small bolt thread

Does anyone know what thread the small bolt is on the front brake cylinder? It's on a '57 1000. Also, what purpose does the bolt serve? Seems a bit odd in terms of placement (and size) if it's merely to keep the cylinder in place (right next to the bigger one!).

Cheers!

Thanks for your help everyone, Roy came through trumps again. I HAD been using the studs to try to pull the drum off. Realising my error, a few taps with a rubber mallet got it off straight away. Drum looks like new, it was the rear cylinder that had seized up. Cylinder and shoes replaced, drum is b...

How do I remove the rear brake drum?

Simple really. Or it should be. I'm trying to remove the rear drum to service the brakes, which failed the MOT, even once adjusted tight. I remove the wheel. I undo the retaining screw. Drum won't move off, though rotates freely in either direction (adjuster is completely slackened off).I tried a hu...

I got it the first time, I don't think my question was too clear. Either way. I cleaned it up, and it worked a treat. I disconnected, re-connected, and it worked. Did this a few times. Kept working. Went to install it, stopped working. I took it apart 2 or 3 more times afterwards, and then put it ba...

I see, thanks. What about the bigger part on the same spindle (sorry for this vague description..). There is a similar looking part, but larger, a little further down, which spins in a moon crecent shaped part which is attached to the windings. If you're still with me..can that part be covered in gr...

I'm going to try it one more time, then give in and get another one. So, grease on the commutator is a no no? I don't know how these things work, could you explain a) what the commutator is, and b) why it shouldn't have grease?

Thanks!

Brushes arrived yesterday, I fitted them, packed the gearbox with grease, put it together and fitted it. It worked! Once. I could hear the motor turning, but the spindles weren't moving. I checked the cable drive, which moved freely and moved the spindles. I checked the wiper motor, but it stopped w...

You've made it perfectly clear, between the two of you. Thank you very much, I'll post progress when the brushes arrive!

Mike, yes the circular disk is seperate, and connected via a red wire to the windings. This is a picture of the car: http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i260/baz_d69/untitled.jpg The wipers move away from eachother. As per my previous post, does that mean the earth terminal on the motor can be wired d...

Thanks, I have ordered a set @ £2.50. With VAT and postage, it came to over £7, that's pathetic.

Btw, Mike, what are "claphand" wipers? At a guess, is it wipers which move towards eachother (i.e. a line of symmetry), rather than in the same direction? If so, those are the wipers I have. Someone must have retro-fitted the later wiper motor to the car.

Thanks for your help so far, bmcecosse and Mike. Mike, that corresponds with what I was theorising. Here is the state of the motor when I first opened it: http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i260/baz_d69/CIMG2553.jpg and this is what the brushes looked like: http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i260/baz_...

Well, I've already disassembled it and got all the parts soaking in white spirit. Brushes need replacing, is there anything else in there that can be replaced/checked while it's open?

Just came back in from doing the above, I connected terminal 1 (black/green) and earth together to + on the battery, and terminal 2 (green) to -. The first time I got a very slight click. Other than that, nothing.

Mike, I just re-read your post, are you suggesting running 12V to the green and and earth to the earth on the body of the wiper motor, or the black/green earth? Also, where does the earth which screws into the body go? There must be a reason for it to go back into the wiring harness rather than eart...

Mike, I checked the documents, it's in fact a 1957. I don't know what you classify as late, but this one has semaphores, a dash mounted ignition switch, pull starter and as you said, the wiper motor under the bonnet (pass side), and no, it's not a split screen. Badges say Minor 1000. I'll try your s...

Wiper Issues

Hi all, I'm sorry my first post here is an issue, I have been lurking for a while. The site has been a great resource so far, but I need a few more specifics for this issue! I've got a 1956 Minor, which I got as a p/x. I've been trying to get it ready for its MOT, and found a few electrical issues. ...
